having now played with carthaginians a bit, the best i have come up with is

I agree this is a question for which the answer is relative. As a history maniac and a gamer I find that it is no more complex than any other game which so realistically portrays battle on this scale ...

don't forget the Kushans - lanced LC with B, shc/ehc combo units, elephants, lanced camels, decent infantry - lot of fun to play
