I believe WAB gets this mechanism from its fantasy battle game in
which lunatic goblins with giant balls and chains erupt out of units
in which they are hidden to mow down enemy lines. I'm not sure the
decision to make viking nutters act the same way is based on a new
reading of the history. It could be an adoption of that game mechanic
from the fantasy game.

Just a guess and word of caution.

But the fundamental effect of Irr A troops in Warrior is (usually)
exactly the same as the Gobbo whatzits; a small expendible which
causes a reduction in morale just prior to the charge of the main
body.

A tactic of the Viking players I used to know was to hold the IrrA
back until a large block of warriors had fixed the opposing units.
The IrrA would then slam into them -- either front or flank depending
on what was exposed.

I'm not saying this is the best way. Just what I saw.
