I'm with Jon, Patrick and Kelly. We only move the front element or
rank and leave the rest in place. It helps to stop the cheese.

Nothing at all. In fact that is just good gamesmanship. What we are trying
to do is twofold.
1. Speed up games.
2. Simulate what a filed commander (not one in a helicopter like we are)
has to deal with. No ancient army had the luxury of moving, realizing its
new position sucked, then go back in time and try a the move a bit
differently. It adds fog of war, and some uncertanty.
We are in NO way trying to push this on other groups. At our Tourny this
weekend the 3 take-back rule was not in force. Its just what we do at home.

FWIW: I prefer 1200 point, 3 hour games. They move faster and for some
reason the cumalative effect isn't so draining. Moreover, I'm a firm believer
that 1200 point armies do *not* eliminate any of the late medieval armies from
effective contention. In fact, I think this cuts down on the usual slew of
elephant/pike armies one traditionally sees.
Depending on my schedule, OK city is very doable for me driving wise.
But....that means a one day tourney (drive down Fri, play all day Sat, drive
back Sun). Don't use me as a reason for this type of schedule but it would be
more typical of people coming in from waaaay out of town to play.

Steve,
How many games do you all play? Do you game both Sat and Sun?
I am looking for ways to increase the amount of players atending our
tournaments. We had 16 said they were going to be here this past weekend for
our DFW tourney. Only 8 showed.
To Lurkers and non-Lurkers alike,
Does anyone else have a format that people seem to enjoy? Do you go less
points, and less time, to get more games in, or just the opposite? Has
anyone else had success with 2 day tournaments, or do most people prefer just
a Saturday, with Sunday reserved for fun games?
I am looking into the possibility of holding a tourney during TwisterCon in
Oklahoma City in March '02. I am open to all suggestions, feedback, and
encouragement that I can get. You can email me privately if you wish at

Chris,
Three take-backs per game? Sheesh! You guys are waaaAAAAaaayyyy too
forgiving! Down here it be cut throat all the way. Ya snooze, ya
lose! The only phase that is called out is the dreaded "last bound!
Do not start another bound!" usually followed by my C-in-C immediatly
throwing a "1" on a waver test! To ensure "morale fibre" there is a
penalty imposed for slow playing.
This weekend I will be attending MOAB (Mother Of All Battlegames)
here in Sydney. 7th edition (with local modifcations and I Phoned
Phil suppliments) in 25mm, 1300 points on a 6 x 4 table, fixed list
and pre-set terrain, 2 games per day over 3 days. There will be 18
of us so it should be an interesting weekend. We use the 50% / 150%
points for shaken, offtable / routed, destroyed and use the resulting
points difference to score from 5-5 to 10-0. Highest score over the
weekend wins.
I'll let the group know what Warrior type problems arise.
Cheers

Mark,
I am just replying off of the top of my head, but I don't think that EIR has
any elephants. If however, you are working on Marian,Triumverate or civil
war armies, well of course they do and the answer to your question is not
that I can find anywhere, particularly in 25's. What I am doing is
converting a Carth. War Elephant to Roman and using Roman foot in the tower
as opposed to those that come with the model. Just an idea.

The Romans got their elephants in these respective periods either from the
"carthagenian" places in North Africa or the "hellenistic places" in the Near
and Mid East. Therefore, you really don't need to modify much of anything
since there are plenty of those types of elephants/crews out there. In fact
(warning, commercial plug to follow), FHE's very own Jake Kovel's Silver Eagle
has lotsa lotsa Irregular (the brand name) elephants. I have a 25mm Numidian
army with 8 of these beasts. Affordable 25mm (the one TRUE scale, heh heh
heh) that's actually accurate for the period. If you're doing it in 15mm, who
can tell the difference? :)

Hmm. I seem to recall you having some problems with Incas masquerading as
Assyrians in that scale, once upon a time...

I am heavily in favor of 1200/1250 point armies. A few thoughts though;
1. It's not that medieval armies are hurt by smaller point values in my opinion, as much as they were helped quite a bit by the increase from 1500 to 1600 way back when. I also think we can look at these armies in a different light now that we have the rank and a half lance rule, the crossbow rule and the two ranks charging LTS rule. These all helped the medieval army.
2. The biggest problem with 1200/1250 point armies in my opinion is the army lists, especially for allied commands. Many of the lists with allied have such strong minimums that you are basically not able to field historical proto-types of the army. I think perhaps a 75% rule for minimums at 1200 points would be a good idea.
3. One thing I remember about play with 1250 point armies, especially in 15mm, was that many fights turned into a giant wheeling affair with both armies trying to push on one side and avoid on another. The smaller point values usually led to less skirmishers, which in turn left vulnerable troops more exposed, etc. Also, many times the terrain placement and deployment of these smaller forced led to them being placed in such a way that a good fight was just not going to happen in the time allotted. Again, these are mostly 15mm examples.
Just a few thought ... Greg

I seem to remember Irregular Miniatures doing an elephant
specifically for Romans. Unless Romans had some veery specific crew
armament I don't suppose there would be much quibbling about the
exact provenance of your elephants.

Hello
My printer is on the whatever and is not working at present. Having mainly used Essex armies in the past although trying and liking other brands as well. I am wondering if an Essex RMA army of 22 packs is enough to have a Warrior army ? Is 1600 pts still used alot or when the rules are published will there be 1100 as the norm in friendly maches ?
Thanks
Brad
