The obvious solution is to color-code the edge of the base. Green vs
brown would look fine. You could even flock one brown dirt and the
other grass green.

I think that the Warrior honchos should suggest an "official" color
coding so that people can easily memorize a 'standard.'

A standard that the darker color be close order and the lighter color
be loose order should suffice, and not lock people into a particular
set of colors.

Why not extend this line of thought to its ultimate logical conclusion? Why
don't we just play with colored cardboard counters that are all exactly the same
size regardless of troop type or formation depth? Why give your opponent any of
the visual cues a real-life battlefield commander might have had? Who needs
figures? They give your opponent information that you as a player would prefer
he not have, while at the same time are far too troublesome for you yourself to
learn to identify, that would require bothersome historical research. The
elements aren't representations of bodies of men and animals that you ought to
know how to identify, they're mere playing tokens in a more complex but
apparently equally abstract chess game. Historically accurate figures and
realism in the rules are really quite dispensable if your primary concern in
playing the GAME is deciding who wins, who loses and who goes to the Nationals.

Anyway, the element bases are too damn small for today's figures, right?
