I have been playing Incans for a number of years which is a loose order foot
army. I found in tournaments I need to buy the two close order foot units
to hold against the charges of mounted units. The necessity is caused by the
fact that loose order foot is required to make a waver test when charged by
mounted. The bulk of the Incans are C Class and a cascading waver failure is
sad thing to see. One answer is to Brush the board but with a Cold Region
army against Dry or Tropical opponents that is not a sure thing. So the bottom
line is to keep from making a waver test when charged by mounted.

My freind and I have been playing Warrior now for a few years, but
still consider ourselves relative newbies. Both of us have run into
situations where we have an option to use close or loose order
regular infantry for a troop type. I have scanned through the rules
and found little reason to go with close order (unless pike). It
seems there are far more advantages to using loose order formations.
Am I missing something? I noticed pike and LTS have an advantage in
counting ranks for hand to hand when close order. In addition, the
options other than waver test from recieving 2 CPF during prep fire
have an advantage for regular close order. Is there some other
advantage I haven't recognized. Thanks...

Loose Order (Unless a list rule applies) take a Waver
Test when being charged by mounted. Close order
doesn't, and depending on your opponent, that can come
in quite handy.
IMO it really comes down to playing syle, and to an
extent your possible opponents. I don't think there
is any "right" answer as to which is better, it's
always going to be dependent on to many factors you
can't influence...

As another newbie, I avoid Loose Order foot because if charged by mounted,
you waiver test, and become shaken if you fail. This happens too often for
comfort, and it's amazingly easy to roll 1. Add enemy chariots or elephants,
to the mix, and your C morale troops have a 50% chance of being shaken just
for being charged. A skilled opponent will be on the hunt for exactly that
situation, so this is not just a theoretical danger. For me, I will be
sticking with close order until I become competent enough to counter these
threats. I use Loose order for the Irreg A foot, where you want the
mobility.
