Normans Vs babylonians, or....Why IrrA are so damned
fun to play. This game was far more complex than the
others, so I've created a sort of map. (.) are open
ground.
the table:
Derek
Clear.........clear...........clear
wood.........clear........brush....
...brush........rocky hillwoods brush
.........clear..........woods........
.......clear....clear..........clear
Me
Derek's Army as I remember it:
CNC and 2 SubG as 2E 4hr Hch
2x 6E Mcm w 2 B per
4 x 6E MI B/sh
2 x 4E Rg LMI J/sh
2 x 6E LI S
2 x 2E MC J
1 x 6E LI B
My Army:
CNC +5 IrrA HC
5x 2E IrrA/B HC L/sh
3x 6E IrrC/D HI/MI J/sh
4E IrrC LC J/sh
6E IrrC LHI J/sh
6E IrrC LI SS
6E IrrC LI B
Well what can I say. I ramdomly drew this table from
terrain hell. The Steep Rocky Hill was half covered
in Wood. The only area I could have conducted a
battle was in the center left between the hill and the
left brush. So, that is where I set my army.
In the left brush I placed my LI SS. Then HI in 2x3,
HC, HC, HI in 2x3, HC, HC, HI in 2x3 across the open.
Then facing the Hill I placed the LHI with the LI B on
their right in the wood. On the far right were the
LC.
Derek's setup was MC facing the brush, then every Bow
in Babylon facing my army, then LI in the woods and on
his far left were MC 6E MI B and LI B. He force
marched one unit of LI S in the center, and this
little unit won the entire game.
I moved first, and with the confidence of a man just
fresh off two major victories, I pushed forward in
marches. Next bound, my plan was still holding as I
moved my infantry forward and expanded to cover the
front of the HC (keep them from charging). The LHI
moved onto the steep, rocky, wooded hill and faced off
against the LI S there, while my LC moved forward to
occupy as many enemy troops as possible. The LHI and
LC did exactly as there were supposed to by taking the
hill and absorbing casualties delaying the enemy
respectively. Thus, I will leave off further
discussion of my right flank, as it was not a factor.
In the center my infantry formed line, but I had
miscalculated the distance and a one element gap was
left exactly in front of one HC unit. This was my
undoing, as Derek had moved his force marched LI up to
within charge reach....so I had to charge through my
infantry into the LI who stood and got assbeat. (side
note: as an infantryman myself, I know exactly what
those HI were thinking when the HC charged
past....MORONS! Those dicks are going to get us
killed!) However, they routed instead of exploding and
my HC had to follow. now my plan begins to unravel as
I have two choices: Move everyone up to absorb
bowfire with the infantry and try to save the HC, or
let him rout the HC and test with at least four units.
I made the wrong choice and moved forward. This led
to the next series of events that forced me to
continue moving until my units could no longer support
each other.
First Derek moved one MC unit forward on my left with
a MI B unit. The Bow unit shot my LI into next week
with something like 6 CPF, then the MC moved up and
charged them in the brush. This was actually a bright
spot for me, as his disordered tired MC rallying
forward in the brush made it easy for one of my HC to
move over and hit his flank in the next bound, shaking
the MI B. 49 points for him, 70 something for me.
I'll leave that flank now, as well, as it no longer
was relevant.
Both flanks secure, my center was compelled to moved
beyond my flanks in order to preserve the line. This
is something Derek does better than anyone I've every
met. Gets you to do something you really don't want
to do. I don't know how he does it, but.... Anyway,
As I moved forward with the infantry, Derek started
putting jiucy targets within charge reach of the
infantry--my HC were hanging back--and I would charge
them and they evade. Now, however, my HC had to move
forward and disperse to start covering the gaps
appearing in the infantry line. Derek had formed a
concave battleline and my infantry had moved into it.
I was by bound 8 being shot to a halt every bound. At
one point I think one infantry unit received shooting
from 64 figures. I couldn't move back, I couldn't
move forward; but if I didn't do something I would
soon have to start waver testing for prep shooting
alone. So I did the only thing I had left to do, I
move the HC forward to try and get some hits on his MI
B. Well...now all the luck from the previous battles
left me and I rolled down, down and down again taking
6 and 8 CPF on the way in. One HC routed on contact,
but the HI didn't shake (thank you) the other stuck on
a MI unit on the right. I was now in real trouble as
my entire army was committed. I had no reserve left,
and Derek was shooting each of the two left HI units
with three units each. On the right the MI B unit
shot and fought 2 HC units and then received an HI
unit's charge (rolled down of course) and recoiled
them. Then the HC unit routed and shook the HI.
Another two HC units charged into the camels but only
one made it there and routed on contact. The other
was shot for some 26 CPF (remember as IrrA I had
little choice on tactics as this point).
So, I look around and noticed I had no army left to
play with. The infantry were all shot halted or
rallying. The HC were all shot to peices or routed.
The LHI were too far away to get near the battle. the
LI were either routed or shooting tired. The LC were
shot up and occupying three enemy units. I resigned.
2-5 loss.
It was a masterfully played game by Derek. While I
foiled his initial plan by shutting down the flanks,
he responded quickly and massed his only asset (bow),
dangled temping targets to lure me on, and picked off
my units one at a time. Just goes to show what I've
always said: "Impetouos general should not run
impetuous armies". :)

I don't think I've laughed so hard after reading a
battle report since I read one of Jamie Fish's reports
from the early 90's! Very entertaining Boyd!!
LOL!

Was that the one where he spilled his whiskey on the table and ended up
trying to suck the remaining whiskey out of the flocking on his stands?
