I wanted to reply to two questions posed earlier:
1) Loose order irregular foot
2) COF
I love both troop types, however typically not in the same army.
1) Loose order foot beacause they are fast, hit pretty hard and cheap.
Typically I like the IRR A's as an up 4 makes up for all sotrs of other
issues. Against cav you just have to rely on trying to go impetuous, losing
your first wave and then wip[ing him out with your second.
2) Close order foot are great in a balanced army, also remember your opponent
has to beat you if you leave no weak spots he must fight your pike or go home
with a 1-1 or so. Not a good deal. I have never in 25's failed to get my
close foot into combat except in games where the opponent was routed early in
the game. I have certainly lost with close order foot armies but only as
regularly as with any other army

Right.
I actually fought two games of Warrior on Saturday (at Crusades; many,
many thanks to Todd Kaeser, not only for organising the tourney but also
for subbing in for me in the third game when I had to go home and tend to
my very pregnant wife!), and used Seleucids. I didn't fight with my pike
in either game - but then the two games took a total of 90 minutes or so;
the presence of pikes across some sections of the battlefield acted
exactly as designed, to funnel targets toward my elephants, who are the
designated strike force and did their job. In neither game did I force
march the pikes, but I really don't see the need: my screen troops will
always be sufficiently far forward to allow the pikes to be across the
center line in bound 2 (ok, not always, but pretty close) and from then on
it is just a question of pushing forward, if needed. if the battle is
dependent on using the pikes in combat, there must be very little
happening lesewhere, and bounds will fly by.

I myself like close order foot in large numbers. When
using them, especially in 15mm, one has to push as
hard as you can w/ them. Any hesitation lessens their
effectiveness. In a recent battle I pushed my 48 man
scot lts blocks to w/in 8 inches or so of the back
edge of my opponents table causing all sorts of
traffic jams w/ his cavalry. Push, push, push...
I'm a big fan of force marching them as well. This
way you don't need the skirmishers in front of them
and they can be used to hold terrain or a flank.
Obviously your close order foot should contain some C
grades as you will have to be prompting them to charge
over and over again.

I really enjoyed reading the reports of Ewan and Todd at Crusades.
You see I had a unique prespective of both games. I was the
victim.....Sorry PLAYER in both their games.LOL... Ewan!!! I tried to
get my Andalusian spearmen (with THE CID as Ally Gen)across the board
to CRUSH your pike. The damn scythed chariot got in the way as it
rolled over them. . If I had known that you were leaving to take
care of your wife, I could have used that as an excuse why I got
crushed so bad.True , I made some ...OK, alot of tactical mistakes,
and I have to thank Ewan that he was polite enough not to mention me
by name. However, I need to let it be known that I ,in my very small
way, helped push him to greatness.
Now to Todd,
(turning to the audience)Casual Observer!! When Todd says that"in a
recent battle", what he means is that he faced the very same
Andalusian Army that just a mere hour or two before was rolled over
by Ewan's Seleucids. And yes, Casual Observer, there were three 48
man blocks of which Todd had. Yes he did push my Andalusian spearmen
back against my side, BUT NOT WITHOUT A FIGHT. OK, Todd did give me a
few pointer.... OK many more than a few.But it was a great battle.LOL
And Yes , the CID did die in the end as he should(must keep to the
script), but he took ALOT of Clansmen with him;-).....
As we are keeping to the script, Yes, it is coming to me now..... the
Scot nobles did shake and retreat and leave the clansmen to their
fate against the CID. Just as in the movie.
However, THE BRUCE did triumph and the 48man blocks were well.
But I had a great time, and when Matt and I got back that night, my
wife knows better than to ask how I did or else she would be in for 4
hours of blow by blow account of each game.So she doesn't ask.

Thanks Todd for a great time.
