Dear All,
The Blue Mountains Wargaming Club hosted a Fast Warrior tournament here
in Australia on the long weekend just gone.
The format was pairs, with each person coming along with the same army
as their partner. In each round one person from the pairing used their
own army, and the other used the army of the enemy. Thus in the first
round I used the army that I had brought (Free Company) and faced the
opponents Midianite Arabs. While on a table nearby, my partner had to
General the Midianites against an opposition lead Free Company.
There were 6 pairs and the games were approx and hour and a half. In
the first 5 rounds we played each of the other pairs, alternating which
member of the partnership got to use the “Home” army. The final game
of the comp saw the pairings working together on a double size FW table
with their own troops. Each player had a “command” and both commands
were required to be beaten ( ie 4 units down) for one side to get a
“win”.
My comp started with a match up against a veritable wall of Camels.
The preset terrain had a couple of sand dunes, and the prospects didn’t
look good. An early rout of one of my longbow blocks ended up working
in my favour – with the routing unit providing a screen to my left
flank while I was doing damage elsewhere. A couple of important
counters passed to shoot up a camel block by concentrating fire, and
the ability to get some cheap charges on the opposing light infantry
saw me just come away with the points 6-1.
The second game saw me commanding the Hohenstaufen Sicilian’s against
my beloved Free Company. It was one of those knight on knight send
them-in and trust the dice kind of games. Suffice to say that my trust
was misplaced and in the all important first contact bound- I managed
to roll down 4, down 4, down 3 and down 3 in consecutive rolls. (Yeh,
yeh I know- tell your story routing pal). 1-8 to the bad guys
Game three saw me once again with the Free Company, and facing
Seleucids. Despite being out scouted, I managed to hold off the pikes
with some skirmishing Longbows, get the Heavy cav into the Baggage and
my SHK general into the opposing CinC. 10-0 to the good guys.
In game four I had the challenge of using the Iazyges against the Free
Company. This was one of the best parts of the comp. This is not an
army I would ever have even thought twice about running. The format
however forced me to try it out. My opponent had gone for the all EHC
option so skirmishing against the knights wasn’t an option. The
terrain however was favourable. The Free Company was faced with the
choice of trying to win or protecting their baggage. He chose the
former and I managed to get into the opposing baggage. Some standoffs,
and charge off tables with the knights allowed me to use the numbers
and get up for a win on the last roll of the game. 8-0
The fifth game was against Ptolemaic and my opponent lead with the
Pikes down the middle and held his peltasts in some rough ground off to
his right. His light Cav were doing a good job of protecting his left
flank until they got isolated against some Longbowmen and my HC. The
crucial point in the battle was where the Ptolemaics elected to take
the waver rather than halt after being shot for 2CPF’s with his 16man
pike block. In fairness, there really wasn’t a choice. The “anything
but a one” call was just tempting fate however. 8-0 to the good guys.
This left the final game with myself and my partner using our Free
Company against the Hoh. Silicians in the showdown for the comp. The
enemy were a point up on us going into the final game so a win was
essential. Being out scouted we opted for an initially defensive set up
with a plan to draw the enemy onto us and counter punch with the
knights. Alas, after some good preliminary shooting, 2 units of enemy
knights got a charge onto a unit of Longbow in a central position.
Despite the fact that they were uphill and supported, the resulting
carnage saw my partner’s general swept away, waver tests failed, and
his command on retreat orders at the end of bound 2 !! Thankfully,
the enemy couldn’t concentrate on the second command and the mercy rule
was invoked with the result recorded as 7-0 to the bad guys.
Congratulations to Paul and Adrian on winning the comp, It is always
good to see aggressive play rewarded. Thanks go to Guy Shepard and Mike
Morgan for the excellent job done in organising the event, and to all
those would took part. The spirit of the event was, as usual,
wonderful.
The final placings were:
Paul Collins/Adrian Williams- Hohenstaufen Sicilian 1st
Greg Preston/Paul Rattray- Free Company 2nd
Murray Evans/ Mark Ball- Bedouin Tribes 3rd
Dave won the “Slippery cliff” award.
Ian Poade won the Umpires choice award.

Dear All,
Results of the Fast warrior comp called-The Quick and the Dead- we had
down here in Oz last weekend.
There were seven rounds played over 2 days (4 Saturday and 3 Sunday)
with games at 1 and a half hours each. Pre-set terrain. Day One –FW
armies 1-132- Players could use up to 4 different armies (one per
game). Day two FW armies 133 onwards- Players could use up to three
different armies.
There was a smaller than usual turn out with only ten players using
troops in anger, and even some of these didn’t play all rounds. Going
into the last round nearly anyone could have won it. Thanks to Darren
for the trophies, Bob for the organisation, and everyone for the fine
spirit in which the comp was played.
Special Notes:
Congratulations go to Paul Rattray who broke through for his first comp
win. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes-
In the last game, Mark B rolled the traditional "Rattray" dice- If Paul
R. has found a way to get others to roll as bad as he does we are all
in trouble !
Brad managed to play more Ball's than were actually at the comp and
must have spent Saturday Night dreaming of finally getting a good
looking Camel !!
John B used Swiss- the umpire's nightmare- "if the second rank is in
combat and half LMI and half MI, and takes away the number it first
thought of, can it disappear up its own first rank ???- I am just glad
no-one used Hussites !!
Bob managed to field an army without naked women in it - and, I have to
out you here Bob- he used regulars !!
