Sorry, I should have specified the Samurai armour. The reason that
they classed as LHI is because of the area covered. However, noble
samurai were covered in more and heavier armour than their Ashigaru
counterparts. Many also had fully covered faces, arms, legs etc. I
too am a student of Japanese Medieval history. I am also a former
Kendo/Kenjitsu student and now a karate instructor.... Ashigaru are
not armoured any where near as well. Their helmets don't fully cover
their faces and their body extremities are not well covered.

See these sites for Samurai armour (keep in mind that some is earlier
armour and although it covers large areas, it does not have as much
metal as later sets)

This one shows Ashigaru and Samurai:

The best armour museum in the world:

The trouble is that noble Samurai armour falls somewhere between EHI
and HI. In the Hutchby books, they allow certain Oriental mounted to
count as EHK. I think that Samurai armour should be EHI without
movement penalties or count as LHI, shielded (probably more
realistic) to account for better protection vs. weapons and missles.

IMHO,

Chris
