Well, although I do read Turtledoves Alt History
stuff, I've never read his Videssos work.

Todd,

The writer of the Videssos series, Harry
Turtledove is a PHD of Byzantine history. There are
figures and they are Byzantine as the Makuran are
Sassanid Persians. Don't forget the Misplaced Legion

Are their figs available for Videssos?

Oh, absolutely! One of the joys of studying and
playing Byzantines
is the sheer weight of nearly-useless hisotircal
trivia to digest in
all the extent military manuals and such.

I would argue we know more about how the folks in
Constantinople
_wanted_ their army to fight than about nearly any
other army in the
entire period covered by the Warrior rules. How that
translated into
actual battlefield usage is in some cases a bit of an
issue but the
theoretical basis is at least quite evident.

And your statement above is, I believe, essentially
what those
manuals indicate.

Speaking of FanWar, I hope, please, that Fantasy
Warrior will have
Videssos lists, divided into sub-periods for the three
series of
novels, with also a Makuran enemy to play against as
well as some of
the other nations. I am pretty sure both Paul Georgian
and Craig
Scott are big Videssos readers (I think both have
briefly mentioned
this in the past) and with their historical background
could
certainly do up some nice lists unfettered by reality.

That would sell one copy of the product to me, which I
might not
otherwise buy.

It's all good. I may have a copy of the misplaced legion laying around if you
like, I can bring it Monday to the shop? It's about a Caesarian legion that gets
transported (magically) to an alternate world which is much like a Commenan
Byzantine fantasy world. The Legionaires fight as mercs for the Empire of
Videssos (Byzantium) against all enemies foreign and domestic (there are plenty
of civil wars ala Byzantine!). And ofcourse you get magic in the mix too. Oh
yeah, and the books are well written too.

PS Steve has read them too.

There's a much easier way to do this, and you can even do it at a NICT
tournament. Just field a late Minoan and Mycenean army with a unit of Irreg
A Myrmidons. Dismount the required general and have him join the unit as
Achilles. Given that he is a general, then only a down 3 roll on his part
can cause him to die. Though this is tough enough, the obvious response
from the Greek player is 'that was Patrocolus'.

Christian Cameron has a dismounted figure of Achilles leading his Myrmidons
carrying a custom shield made out of silver that he had a silversmith
make...

Much better. I should have thought that post through more. But only if
shot at short range from the rear (an overhead shot wouldn't hit his
heel).

And not just Reg armies. In The History of the
Franks, early Frankish armies under Mummulus were
twice described as moving rapidly through roadless
forests using foot paths to outflank the enemy, even
though they fight as MI.

Question for History buffs: Once was vs. the "Italian
Saxons". Did Gregory mean the Ostrogoths, or some
other group, or were there Saxons in N. Italy?
They're not Lombards, he talks about them elsewhere.

It's all good. I may have a copy of the misplaced
legion laying around if you like, I can bring it
Monday to the shop? It's about a Caesarian legion that
gets transported (magically) to an alternate world
which is much like a Commenan Byzantine fantasy world.
The Legionaires fight as mercs for the Empire of
Videssos (Byzantium) against all enemies foreign and
domestic (there are plenty of civil wars ala
Byzantine!). And ofcourse you get magic in the mix
too. Oh yeah, and the books are well written too.

PS Steve has read them too.

Well, although I do read Turtledoves Alt History

Todd,

The writer of the Videssos series, Harry
Turtledove is a PHD of Byzantine history. There are
figures and they are Byzantine as the Makuran are
Sassanid Persians. Don't forget the Misplaced Legion
which are Marian Romans.

John,

I'd talk to Jon C. About the Videssos stuff. As of
now I am only peripherally involved with FanWar,
mainly as a Playtester and sometimes List writer.

Are their figs available for Videssos?

Oh, absolutely! One of the joys of studying and
playing Byzantines
is the sheer weight of nearly-useless hisotircal
trivia to digest in
all the extent military manuals and such.

I would argue we know more about how the folks in
Constantinople
_wanted_ their army to fight than about nearly any
other army in the
entire period covered by the Warrior rules. How that
translated into
actual battlefield usage is in some cases a bit of an
issue but the
theoretical basis is at least quite evident.

And your statement above is, I believe, essentially
what those
manuals indicate.

Speaking of FanWar, I hope, please, that Fantasy
Warrior will have
Videssos lists, divided into sub-periods for the three
series of
novels, with also a Makuran enemy to play against as
well as some of
the other nations. I am pretty sure both Paul Georgian
and Craig
Scott are big Videssos readers (I think both have
briefly mentioned
this in the past) and with their historical background
could
certainly do up some nice lists unfettered by reality.

That would sell one copy of the product to me, which I
might not
otherwise buy.
