I have been toying around with the idea of Medieval French for a
while. Partly because it is difficult, even for me, to match their
historical record, partly as a opponent for my HYWE/Free-Companies
and partly because of the appeal of large numbers of Irr A SHK and
Brigans with an S standard to boot.

But I also started recently kicking around the merits of 1.5-rank
2HCT (even if being CO they are caught flat-footed, right?) in the
back of my mind, based on actually being able to double up ranks of
Brigans against some opposition where it was better than the back
rank of JLS. And that is when I noticed one can mix Voulgiers with
Crossbowmen in this list, as regulars, and wind up with a unit as
invulnerable to missiles as Brigans are but also able to last longer
in HtH and able to dish out quite a bit of shooting itself. All this
2HCT gets pretty expensive, though, but I pared the list down to the
following, a bit short on SHK but not critically so given the
Brigans as additional shock troops. Admittedly it is not a "terrain
army".

1,562 total points so far
1 staff of CinC...
1E "Irr B" SHK L,Sh w/ PAS @ 236 = 236
4 units of Knights, each...
2E "Irr A/B" SHK L,Sh @ 136 = 544
3 units of Voulgiers/Crossbowmen, each...
8E "Reg 1C/7D" HI/MI 2HCT,Pa/CB @ 142 = 426
4 units of Brigans, each...
4E "Irr C" HI/MI 2HCT,Pa/JLS @ 89 = 356

With only 7 units to prompt, and some of those are not really
intended as attacking units, I figure I can get away with a single
general whose use is to inspire/prompt the Brigans and rally
anything that gets broken.

Frontage might be, no, definately is, a problem but I am also
thinking of about an 8E unit of peasants worth 37 points to finish
out the list which could sit on a flank, or somewhere, and be broken
but hopefully last long enough. Alternatively the remaining points
might be spent on doubling the number of Voulgier/Crossbow units at
half the size which would also permit a bit of stretching the line
using inter-unit gaps.

Anyway, something different from the usual killer lists that might
still be worth trying out.

Some suggestions:
- Don't take your CnC as a staff element; knights even with PAS, are there to
fight;
- Take another general; the "net cost" of an SHK general is fairly small;
- Of the 7 units of Voulgiers and Brigans, that's probably 2 more units than you
need;
- You need at least one more knight unit (besides filling out the CnC);
- Don't buy a cheap peasant unit to hold the flank; get LI instead. One of the
great virtues of this list is the abundance of cheap but servicable LI. Four 2
stand units of Reg D LI CB is only going to cost you 72 points. Put 3 of them
on the front line covering your "inside" flank, and the 4th one well behind
those three for when they start to crumble, and you have a flank that will take
your opponent many bounds to chew through.
- Are the Vougiers in 1 1/2 ranks really better than the Pavisiers who will
often fight in 2 ranks? If you go with the Early Period and take the Pavisiers
instead, you save a bunch of points, since: LTS is a point cheaper than 2HCT;
you can drop the back rank of all your knights to EHK, which really doesn't
hurt their performance very much and saves you 9 points per element.

I know from past exchanges, John, that we have very different list buying and
playing styles (my Medieval French list currently has 2 Brigan units, some LI,
and knights; that's it). But hey, I figure maybe I can get you to come around
one of these days. ;-)

All good points, Mark, as always. Care to post the above-referenced?
