From Websters ...
Main Entry: min·i·mize
Pronunciation: 'mi-n&-"mIz
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): -mized; -miz·ing
Date: 1802
1 : to reduce
2 : to keep to a minimum
3 : to underestimate intentionally : PLAY DOWN, SOFT-PEDAL <minimizing losses
in our own forces while maximizing those of the enemy>
- min·i·mi·za·tion /"mi-n&-m&-'zA-sh&n/ noun
- min·i·miz·er /'mi-n&-"mI-z&r/ noun
While not wishing to speak for Jon, my understanding is that the intent is more
focused on definition number 1., to reduce - rather than number 2., to keep at
a minimum.
If each march segments ends closer to the enemy you are marching towards, I
believe you are in obeyance.
Take care ...

Patrick ...
Does your unnamed question have to do with what happens to you when the unit
you are marching towards, marches off in a direction where you really do not
wish to go? It's a real effort not to get sleezy with this one, especially in
15mm. ~wink~

This then brings up a major point. My dictionary (which was from Encarta)
is different than yours. I used to play (but since have changed) that if
you were ending closer to the prescribed enemy, then you were 'minimizing'
the distance as well.
It was not until I read my dictionary that the word minimize seemed less
ambiguous. However, after reading your research on the word (websters), I
definitely think 'minimize' is ambiguous.
Defining terms is something every rule book must face. I feel that Warrior
needs to define 'minimize' since two dictionaries are in conflict.
Hopefully Jon will hear us.
PS. from previous email, Jon wants you to go directly towards the enemy to
qualify for advance. If you are going partially away, then you are not
going entirely towards. This then brought up other questions, which I will
avoid for the time being, at least until step 1 is resolved.

Jon's in Denver participating in GhengisCon right now.
Actually, he's probably in the car right now reveling in his many victories...
I'm sure when he gets back he'll have a complete answer for you...just not right
away.

Yup, several questions regarding that line of thought.

Todd, I am glad you mentioned this. Not because I am hanging on the edge of
my seat waiting for a response, but rather so I can address this issue.
I have noticed a cultural change in our society which I term 'NEED IT NOW'.
I personally find it revolting to pressure someone (friend, coworker) on
time because you either "think" you need it now, or you didn't preplan and
really do need it now.
From this group standpoint, I know Jon gets pressured to answer questions
quickly. I hope however that I don't send that wavelength. For me
personally, I am content to wait a week or two or three to get an answer.
Particularly one the requires analyizing the rules or coordinating with the
other FHM to make sure that is the answer wanted.
In my own business (construction) I have seen hasty, not well thought out
replies cost some serious money. Hence, I would much prefer to have the FHM
provide a well thought answer to a question a week or two later, than to
have an answer within the hour.
