The other day Greg indicated I had said something smart ass and offended
someone. This is highly likely as I am just that way, but he hasn't yet told me
what he was referring to and I wanted to apologize if such was necessary.

One possibility is that my recent response to Mark that his question was not a
rules question was interpreted as some kind of slap. Nothing could be further
from the truth. Mark's question was what order I recommended giving a command
to spring an ambush given a diagram he posted. I offered my opinion but I also
took the time to point out that I wasn't offering more than an opinion so we
were all clear on what was being answered and what was not. Why bother doing
this you ask?

Well, I'll tell ya:

I have a duty to respond to my customers. And the most important part of that
responsibility is my job of answering rules questions. As the only official
source of rules answers on Warrior, and with players counting on me to clarify
their issues for them, and being very imperfect, I try and take great care to be
as clear and as well-researched as possible when I answer.

The problem is, I get every sort of question-asking methodology known to man
tossed at me. For example, how am I supposed to deal with a mail that says:

"I don't agree with rule x.xx"

Should I answer with FHE philosophy on why the rule is that way? That takes
time. Should I ignore it? That might send the wrong impression. But it isn't
a rules question and offers no reasoning or alternative, so what's a poor fourth
horse to do?

Questions like: "How should I make x happen?" are equally problematic. What if
there are multiple ways to do x? What if x shouldn't even be happening in the
first place or is illegal or unhistorical?

When Marks follow-up question came in, I tried to ensure everyone understood I
thought it was a question of opinion and not rules clarification and then
answered it the best I could. I apologize if that methodology offended anyone
and I'll try and do better.

Again, the more care you take with asking, the easier the answering is....

Jon
