Actually, I'm a 3-time winner:

1. I first won the NITC in 1996 in Jacksonville, Florida using Khumer. The
highlight from this tourney was beating Derek on his home turf (2-1, but enough
to get the job done). Since then, we've had on and off negotiations to form a
North-South Alliance for Cold-Wars. He also provided pay back last year by
knocking me out of the NITC in the first round with his Koreans (but if I only
passed that counter with my Reg A EHC. . .).

2. My second NITC, as Chris notes, was in 2000, with Seluecids. This
tournament was memorable because I defeated David Stier to get to the finals.
Then, I had an epic final with Chris that we still recount annually. I had a
"brilliant" plan to diffuse Chris's Irr D Prussians HTW by jumping in front of
them early with a unit of 4 Tarantine light cavalry. That part of my plan
worked out fine, but I hadn't planned on Chris passing his waver test and
charging on into my pike. After I soiled myself, Chris managed to roll -3 with
his Prussians. There was combat all over the battle field but that roll sealed
the final.

3. I won my third NITC in 2001 with 100 Years War English (before they became
the hot army). In this tourney, I ended up beating Todd Kaeser in the final
using Hellenistic Greek. I got the terrain I wanted (none), and went Peltast
hunting. Notably, if Todd had gone with a better Hellenitic army (meaning one
with an Elephant or two), the final would have been much different.

Then I got cocky trying to "3-peat" (BTW, I believe David Stier did win 3 in a
row back in the early 90's, but I'm not sure about that). I showed up in 2002
with Midianites. My thinking was "as long as Holder doesn't match me with
Aztec, I can make this work." First round, not only did Holder match me against
Aztec, but against Todd K ready for revenge from the 2001 final (but I'm not
bitter:). This time, he got the terrain he wanted (lots of it). I caused a few
early wavers, which Todd passed, and then started to lose slightly. Knowing
that a round 1 slight loss is as devastating as a round 1 big-loss, I decided to
lose big (with the hope of getting lucky). My camels went in, the Aztecs passed
their wavers, and the camels died. Three-peat quest over.

I generally try to use a different army every year. I borrowed Tim Brown's
Gupta's last year, and this year, well lets just say I'll be using something
different again this year. I do this for a few reasons. First, I have the
luxury that I can (my friend Danny Weitz has a virtual wargaming Mecca in his
basement). Second, it gets boring using the same army year-in and year-out.
Third, it's my view that it can be a disadvantage if people know what someone is
using on a regular basis. For example, as good as a player as David Stier is,
one can go to an NITC pretty much knowing that he'll be using Sicilians/Spanish
or some similar army with similar make-up. When doing the pre-convention
planning, that allows me not only to think about how I would play against those
armies, but how I would play against someone with his playing style using those
armies. By contrast, Derek's use of that wacky Korean list that I had never
contemplated gave him an edge against me in the first roundlast year. Of
course, if I played him in the second round, my scouting network would have had
fully apprised me of the opposition by then, but that's the subject of another
post. Last, I also feel that winning without one's best army could be very
rewarding, and also easier to make excuses when losing:).

BTW, Todd Kaeser keeps meticulous records of every tournament battle he has, and
he has has a running list of NITC winners for at least the last 10 years. When
he cools his jets from coaching baseball, I'm sure his arm could be twisted to
post the historical results here or in Spearpoint.'

Dave.

Dave,

Didn't you run "Belgian" style Mongols when you first returned from
Europe? I recall Ewan mentioning that nobody in the US played that
way, but I thought you gave it a run when you first returned.

Yeah, in 15's. Never in the NITC or in 25's, where the scale doesn't work.
They did fine. It was in honor of the Belgians, who housed me after I ran out
of money traveling through Europe. I think I won a few local tournaments and
Historicon events with them. I would run them in mini "Squads" of 5 units, 2
units of HC and 3 units of 4LC. I also had 2 units of EHK.

IMO, this army was much more effective in 7th then it would be in Warrior. This
is because of the changes in shooting arc between the two rules sets. Under
7th, my Regular LC could avoid most shooting for a turn or two -- enough time to
set up whatever I had cooking. Under Warrior, the invisible element arc (You
know what I mean) creates enough firepower to push all the pesky LC units back.
Don't get me wrong, I still love units of 4 LC as a support troop, I just don't
think they can really form a viable core of an army anymore.

Howdy,

If someone wants to do the leg work and compile lists of the winners of
various tournaments I'd be happy to post them to the NASAMW site. Last year
I went through old Spearpoints and compiled that sort of data for the 15mm
DBM events at Fall In!, Cold Wars and Historicon. You can see the results
at: http://www.nasamw.org/nasamw_hall_of_champions.htm

One of the main reasons I bailed on 7th many years back was that
shooting was all over the place depending upon who you were playing,
and so many different interps arose that no one was certain which 7.x
version they were on. As someone who ran mostly Alex Imperial and
Normans I was always getting the dirty end of the shooting stick, as
it seemed I could never manuver away from shooting but the other guy
could always line up the perfect shot. Not as bad as the "pee in the
pants" effect pike armed elephants had on everyone, but still
confusing.

Personally, I prefer the concrete shooting rules now. I still face
alot of shooting without much return fire, so it is nice to know or
at least be able to determine quickly who will shoot where. I've had
no trouble with firing arc in Warrior.

give me a little time and I will compile a record for as far back as I can.
With some help we can produce a decent timeline. Besides baseball we're also
moving to a new house :-)

Thanks for the kudos Markowitz,

Todd Kaeser
