I should start with telling you that I live in an ancients diaspora -
I will have to infect some of my board gaming friends to start war gaming.
What I have is 2-3 ten year old armies. At that time, only WRG 6th
edition was existent in Germany, and therefore it was pretty obvious
how to base units. On the other hands, all those armies need to be
rebased today - the frontage was shorter than WRG 7th, and casualties
were removed, so this meant a way of basing making this possible.

I would like to have my armies compatible to: DBA, DBM and Warrior. I
do have DBx rules at hand, but my Warrior rule set is stuck in the
post (hope it's not lost...). Anyways, I really would like to start to
rebase my armies now, and so I want to avoid mistakes which
might force me to rebase again. Don't be astonished if my questions
might sound very basic - I haven't played any of those rule sets yet,
I first need to rebase my armies...

a) How shall I base generals? If I understood the DBx rules correctly,
they're just one figure on an element, and they are not based
individually? Is this true as well for Warrior? Or do they need to be
based on single bases?

b) WRG 6th and 7th had the concept of wedges which meant that special
troop types had to be based individually (you needed a single
Macedonian lancer for the tip of your lancer wedge, e.g.) - this
concept doesn't exist in DBx, does it? And what about Warrior?

c) DBM has strange base depths for certain troop types - Warband (F)
or Horde (F) e.g. Does Warrior use the same depths? Or is it just the
good ol' WRG 7th distinction for close, loose, open formation for the
frontage and close, other infantry, cavalry for depth?

d) Anything else I should know?

Thanks for any help

Peter

Below is the rules excerpt on basing:

© 2001 Four Horsemen Enterprises, LLC 11

2.51 Elements: Troops are combined into elements of several figures of the same
type and class and/or one or two models fixed to a
single base. Since casualties are not removed, part-elements on split bases are
not needed.
2.511 Element Strengths
The number of figures and/or models per 25mm or 15mm element is as follows. For
6mm, double the number of figures or
models on an element base, but treat them as the 15mm/25mm number of figures for
all game purposes.

12 © 2001 Four Horsemen Enterprises, LLC
Troop Type Number of Figures or Models per Element
Close formation troops 4
Regular loose formation foot 4
Other loose formation troops, 3
Open formation troops 2
Light bolt-shooters. 1 or 2*
Other Artillery 1*
Elephant, chariot, cart, wagon 1*
Optional LI on same base with elephant (13.0). +2
Herds, dogs 3-5**
All "E" class, non-combatants 3-5***
Pack animals 2-3

*This represents the number of models. The number of drivers or crew figures
will be specified in the army list.

**Stampeding herds and war dogs fight and cost the same as four horse scythed
chariots, regardless of how many figures are on the
base. (See 2.514 and 16.0).

***E Class troops fight and have the same point value as 3-figure elements. The
player has the option to mount more figures on the
base (and/or use a larger base, 2.512) to give the impression of a mob.

2.512 Element Bases
An element’s figures or models must be fixed on rectangular bases of card or
similar material. It is usual to enhance visual
effect by disguising bases with scenic flock or plastic wood, not merely
painting them ground color.
Regulars should be evenly distributed along the base in 1 level rank, and
irregulars distinguished by being placed more
randomly.

Base size varies as follows with troop type and figure scale:

Figure scale: 25mm: 15mm: 6mm:

Frontage: 60mm 40mm 40mm

Depth for:
Close formation infantry 20mm 15mm 10mm
Loose or open formation infantry 30mm 20mm 15mm
Knights, cavalry, camelry. 40mm 30mm 20mm
Elephants, chariots, expendables. 80mm 40mm 30mm
E Class 30mm 20mm 15mm
Optional E Class* 40mm 30mm 20mm
Artillery, transport** 60mm 40mm 40mm

*"E" class may, at the player’s option, use the deeper bases to accommodate
extra figures to more accurately depict their
mob-like status on the battlefield (2.511). Additionally, they may be based
with rear elements replaced with puffs at dust-colored
cotton wool, suggesting crowds arriving late or leaving early in the murk.

**Artillery and transport elements may be based on deeper bases than indicated
in order to accommodate larger models and
scenes. If this is done, however, they must be treated as being on the
correctly sized base for all combat purposes. For example, some
other game systems base 25mm baggage camps at a depth of 80mm. There is no need
to rebase your beautiful camp: simply treat that
depth as that defendable by only one element of troops.
Transport that is integral to artillery may also be represented according to
13.311.

Using troops based differently:
Fortunately, ancient and medieval miniatures games have the best common basing
in the hobby. We have written the basing
for Warrior to allow maximum integration of miniatures based for other games.
There is no objection to bodies consisting of an even number of multiple bases 2
to 4 elements in depth but only 1 in
frontage to be based together. Players often find it convenient to base such
troops as pikemen in this manner. Troops based on
double-depth elements fight as normal elements and generally move normally. The
concept of ‘ranks’ still applies to them, even
though they have multiple ranks on the same base. Such troops may not expand
frontage as a result of combat (11.0). When such
troops expand or contract frontage in a maneuver, they count as having done so
by the number of ‘element-equivalents’ that expanded
or contracted.
Some manufacturers’ figures are much larger than the nominal 15mm/25mm scale.
It is permissible to extend depth (NOT
WIDTH) of an element to accommodate such if necessary. The guiding principles
should be that it should be no more than required
to fit the figures securely to the base and will not permit the owning player to
derive any game benefit.
If the figures of both opposing armies are based for another system, decide how
much frontage represents one element and
play on!
