The recent discussion on Almughavar's started with an observation
from someone that armies including that troop type had increased in
popularity recently.
What are considered the "best" competition armies by successful
players in the USA?
We, in Australia, have a long experience of the best players
consistently winning tournaments with a variety of armies, sometimes
of surprising choice.
Prior to the replacement of WRG 7th (as played here) by Warrior there
was a marked overrepresentation of armies in which cavalry could form
wedge, and Teutonic Knights were popular. We are now realising the
relative superiority of lance armed cavalry in general now that there
is no wedge (or rather now that everyone in effect gets free wedge).
We haven't played enough tournaments yet to see what is consistently
popular.
There were a lot of Seleucids in our recent tournament but I think
this was at least in part a back to basics approach.
We are having another tournament in October (our Labour Day Long
Weekend) which is 1300 points, 25mm, on 6*4 tables. I made the
mistake of taking Parthian in this format once and had nowhere to
move (unlike at Canberra each January on big tables in 15mm at 1500
points). We may be able to better evaluate then.
I would appreciate any remarks on perceptions of what makes a "good"
army for competition purposes.

ps I run for choice Maurikian Byzantine, Sarmatian, Bactrian Greek or
Parthian and I am painting Later Crusaders, but none of these except
Bactrians were chosen because I think that they are a really tough
army. I do think that Bactrian Greek is one of the toughest and most
balanced armies around and I look forward to seeing the new lists

Go to www.nasamw.org and look up tourney results. That'll give you an idea of
what gets used.

Adrian,
My personal preference is any army with lots of Regular "D" Pike or LTS
armed close order foot backed up my some form of missiles along with good
counter-punching lancer armed cavalry. Sadly, "D" trained troops shoot as well
as "A's and B's" in Warrior. So why would you want your bows to cost any more?
Furthermore, you just get more troops on the table! :)

Okay, old buddy, I'll bite. I'm so paranoid about die rolls that the
reason I'd want "my bows to cost any more" is so they won't shake or
break when they test waver. If they break, then the other D's will
test and shake, and so on, and so on, and so on. I like to construct
my army so that to beat me, you have to do it man to man, by melee.
None of this obliquely making me shake without a fight, or shooting
me from a distance. Of course, my ancient ancestors felt the same
(until the Byzantine era, that is ). In addition, of course, I
don't really have any bows to worry morale over anyway. As you know,
this is an unmanly Turko-Persian weapon, used only by Greeks when LI
in skirmish . Perhaps you are not aware that bow comes from two
Greek words: "Ba" (meaning yuck) and "ow" (meaning ouch! that hurt).
Give me any word, and I can show you how it come frrrom the Greek. My
Byzantines look forward to the next encounter with your infidels.
