For those folks who have run a DoW tourney (Tim?)
I understand the standard is 1200 points, 420 points of D or E before
command factors.
Is this right?
Why 420?
4x4 table in 15mm? number of terrain features?
any other special rules?
whose original idea, so i can give credit in the new rulebook?
Jon

Good stuff, Tim.
A/B class troops : Max of 20 %
D Class troops: Min of 40%
I had heard of 420 of D's and E's, but not 40%. 40% of 1200 would be 480,
which makes more sense. Any idea where I heard the 420 number?
This is also first heard of the A/B maximum. Is this what you did at the
most recent point con?

Thanks, Tim. We are going to use it this fall at a con here in KC and also
put it in the new rulebook as a tourney format (with credit to you, of
course).

Jon,
I originally had the thought of running such a tournie based upon my
opinion that most ancient armies probably did not consist of mostly
elite units of high morale. I thought that the armies probably had a
small standing army and lots of conscripts / irregulars. Thus, I
started the "Dogs of War" theme at PointCon 5/6 years ago.
Originally, the format went something like which follows, but has
been varied a bit over the years:
A/B class troops : Max of 20 %
D Class troops: Min of 40%
Command points DO count towards those min/max requirements.
Generals do NOT.
( This works equally well then for either 1600 or 1200 points )
Terrain picks:
NO changes except where a Dogs of War army faced a 'normal' army.
Then, the Dogs of War army got to add 1 to its rolls, while the
normal subtracted 1. I did this to reflect my feeling that a Dogs of
War general would probably be more cautious and force a more elite
army to attack in terrain more to the Dogs' general's liking.
Prompting:
A D class unit containing a general does NOT test for being prompted
to charge.
( I felt the general's leadership at the front was sufficient to
overcome any doubt about attacking)
Morale:
Any D class unit routing an enemy upgrades to C class for the rest of
that battle.
( Successful combat experience )
Tournament scoring:
Everything stays the same except for the Dogs vs Normal matchup:
Then the Dogs army automatically gets to add 1 to it's score. ( Thus,
you could get a 6 )
Table Size:
Originally I envisioned no change in size, but for the interests of
time I went with 3 by 6 for 1600 pts in 15mm, then 3 by 5 for 1200
for 3 hour rounds. Ambrose and I also spent hours making custom
terrain one year and did preset terrain of varying types - each table
was "themed" - i.e. the the major water feature with a stream and
marshes. A desert table with dunes / rocky hill. A table that had a
builtover area / farm / apple orchard. A woods filled table. An open
plains table. Etc, etc. We felt this cut down on the time needed to
set up and also forced some balanced armies composition and in effect
produce a 'scenerio ' like effect on the games that really forced
some players into creative generalship.
The first year was really quite entertaining - armies would begin to
fall apart, then a sudden change in fortune would swing the battle
completey around. PLus, I think a number of people discovered new
found respect for D class troops.
I may have forgotten some small detail, and there have been tiny
adjustments over the years. I'm sure people will write in to expose
the horrors I inflicted upon them at one time or another.

Ed Bernard had to sub for me this year at PointCon: I was on AD for a
short while with the Army...you know how that story goes...
As for the points: Don't know...always run it more or less the same.
Probably Ed making an adjustment as he best saw fit. For the previous
5 years before that, and maybe longer - been a long time - I've run
it how I described.

We had no restriction on A/B troops this year; and the D cost was
stated *not* to include command costs (which I think is different from
Tim's previous regime).

This is how we discussed it earlier in the year. FWIW, I like this
(not counting command points). And with no A/B restrictions on
troop types, everybody's army is binary:) :)

Often, yes. But not counting command points very much restricts
possible lists - for good or bad - as many armies simply cannot *get*
480 points of D class (that's a lot of Ds!). One suggestion has been
to allow for increased maxima of D class in a list to get to 480;
another 0 which was used by some this last year, mistakenly - was to
allow for downgrading to D class in lists where it's not otherwise
possible to get to 480. So we had D-class close-order Vikings, and
D-class Midianite camels...
