recognized as elite and superior to its opponents
consistently, and for centuries. Even a Texas
peckerwood like me remembers The Alexiad, King
Harald's Saga, and the scurvy and self-serving epistle
from that Dukas fellow. I'm sure Paul can quote many
more extant references regarding the Varangians and,
given his scholarship, I am happy to accept this AND
the precedent it implies. No problem.
But, can you say "Almughavar"?

Excellent point Mike. I find it interesting that Paul notes that trained
guardsmen displayed untrained tendencies. Having this in mind from a recognized
scholar such as Paul, it would then seem that some kind of condition should be
created to demonstrate this behavior, whether it be an option for the player to
use them as either Reg or Irreg or making a list rule or to arm them in a
historical fasion which there is evidence (ie: the LTS comment from Paul). FHE
has proven that it can think outside of the box when it comes to ancient combat
simulation. Why not try to tackle this? I'm quite sure that the membership of
this board would prefer to have units behave and perform as historical as is
humanly possible in a simulation such as Warrior. As Paul has pointed out, the
evidence seems to support Gregs insistence that something be done, but the game
system as it presently is, does not allow for this unit to behave and fight as
it historically did. I have all the faith in the fact that
the gentlemen in FHE have the ingenuity to correct this now that it has been
brought to their attention by their supporters and the list writer himself.
Regarding the vocal minority, I remind you that it is always the vocal minority
and active adherents that bring issues to the light of day. I applaud the
efforts of people like Don, Scott, Chris, Greg, Paul, Patrick, and Harlan for
bringing up points of interest and subjects of historical note. It is just this
sort of interchange of ideas that stimulates a desire to further research
history and truly makes the Warrior group far superior to their competition!
Hopefully FHE will choose the path of discussion rather than that of closed
mindedness on this issue. To do so otherwise is a diservice to the readership
and the system continued success.
Sincerely yours,
Kelly Wilkinson
