If one has a unit with an attached detachment of shooters, can one
"go into skirmish" by detaching the shooters -- and must they be
moved in front of the unit, or can/must you do a "swap ranks" so that
element is actually further forward?

I'm sorry Doug. I don't understand the question. A detachment may enter
skirmish if it otherwise could as part of a move that takes it out a combined
body. if you exachneg ranks, that is the only move you can make and can't also
change formation. nor can you have part of a body in skirmish and part not.
Does this help?

Jon

Yes.
So a detachment in the rear ranks _can_ leave the body out the front
and become detached, moving as far forward as their movement allows?

(Or do an exchange ranks and become the first rank, but still be
attached in one body, if all you want to do is start shooting
effectively.)

Only very rarely. A detachment leaving its parent must abide by all
movement rules, including those for interpenetration.
