Chinese armies with foot blocks that combine spear and bow are
viable, and we should see some of that type in tournament play.

The spears and bows combined match up well against any mounted,
including elephants, and are 'not bad' against many foot opponents.

Ewan, Mark Stone, and others have talked about opposing them with
Romans.

Mark Stone and Ewan figure out some numbers that roughly equal point
costs of Late Roman legions don't really beat the Chinese spearmen.
Note also that various Chinese or Korean armies have some lancers,
at least which can be EHC, and a few can be SHC. Late Romans don't
like those much either.

So, various explore the earlier Roman options, especially Marian
Roman with Numidian allies primarily for elephants.

This is just an opinion, but I defy anyone to assemble an earlier
roman army, and perform well in any major tournament.

I personally see the issues of maneuver and frontage control, given
using slow, compact close order foot with no missile fire,
insurmountable.

You must buy your Roman list perfectly, get reasonably correct
terrain, and deploy it with no mistakes. You don't get to be sloppy
at all. You must then advance your battle line, covering gaps and
flanks, with exacting precision.

I don't think anybody can combine the passion and desire to do so
with the skill and experience necessary. I'm not going to do it!

I challenge you. If you love early Roman armies, think and play and
get it nailed down. If you are a very skilled player, try your hand
at an early Roman army.

I'm not an Early Roman player, I'm a Late Roman player, and I've
followed this interesting thread.

I take 3/4 EHC units and a few small units of Auxillia Bow in among
my legions to provide the additional/second punch when needed, and
the auxillia bow units work to add additional bow fire to the four
legged enemy beasties, making the legions job a little easier.

Can the enemy throw a lot of light stuff out there to slow me down,
sure, but I have some good stuff to fight lights, and in Warrior
every broken/shaken unit counts toward some command's defeat.

I agree, you have to pay attention the whole game, from terrain
placement, through initial positioning of units, until the game is
ended, and some times LIR just doesn't have the umph to get you a 5,
but it certainly will test your generalship,

Mike
