My son and I have played a couple of games running his Japanese as Late Feudal
Cnc 2E HK, 1 2HCT/1 1HCW, both B IB
Sub 2E HK, 1 2HCT/1 1HCW, both B IB
2 x 4E HK, 1 2HCT/1 1HCW, both B IB
6 x 6E front 3E LEHI 2HCT/rear 3E 1HCW, both B IB
3 x 6E LI B IB
VERY small foot print army with just 13 units
LI not needed for traditional 'screen against shooting'...LEHI brushes it off.
Playing Ottoman Turks, Japanese lost 1 4E HK (dismounted as all LEHI) and one 6E
samurai/ashigurai (spl?)...both units broken required 3 Turk units EACH...both
lost to flank charges, the 4 units facing the samurai frontally were hammered.
Samurai lost as time ran out, one more turn should have seen the at least half
the triumphant Turkish units slaughtered.
What have other Japanese players decided about these guys?

Roger,
I've played against these guys and they are tough when the Samurai player
gets brush. The only way to dig these guys out is to get them on the flank and
I'm not sure I would want to face the LEHI guys frontally as they are very
strong to say the least.

Roger,
I too own the hapless Blemeye. Mine is going to become Abysinians while
most of the Li B will either remain the same or become sudanese bowmen. What to
do with the other 60 horsemen. . . Do you have any constructive ideas for this
hamstrung JLS cav army?

The one game I have played with my shiny new Samurai army was
against a couple of beginners who were using my Late Romans, so I
really didn't get a fair contest. That being said we did determine
that those Samurai units (which I ran in the same size and
configuration as you did) are VERY tough frontally and pretty much
imune to shooting. If they cold avoid being broke on the first turn
by the Samurai rolling up in a big way, the also notoriously tough
triple armed Roman legionarii units could hold them off fairly
well. The best sucess that the Roman had was in launching a couple
of lance armed cavaly unit into the Samurai from outside their
charge range (in this case Germanic nobles an Roman clibanrarii..I
wouls supect that very heavy mounted troops like knights or
cataphracts would do even better.)
All in all, I'm very pleased with the "Feudal Japanese" army. The
biggest down side that I can see is the huge cost of those nasty
Samurai units. I can almost buy two fully kitted out legionarii
units for my Romans for what one Samurai unit costs.
How did your 2hct LB armed HKs do? Once again, mine faced Roman jls
armed HC so I didn;t get a good sense of what they could do.

I'm going to try running them in tandem with the LMCm L, Sh. Also, throw a
small LC J, Sh in tandem with a ridiculously small LCm B FAR out on both
flanks (or flank march). Camel proof all the Blemmye CAV, have opposing CAV
disordered at the start of the fight. Still going to be a tricky army to do
anything with, but you have to love Irr A. Even tired and disordered can
cause a lot of grief.
You know, it would seem to me that at some point, the guys on horse back
would have said, "Look how long those camel jockey's spears are!" (I know,
it's not the length of your spear, its the ability to roll up)
I've played Abyssinians, too...like them a lot.

Mounted 4E Japanese HK are close to even against 2E HK/EHK with
lance...support shooting can tip the balance.
They are better moving to a vital spot and dismounting.
