Jon,
When your reply came back, I can see where the confusion is. My graphic
was distorted when it arrived and the position of the units misplaced. I will
use periods to mark the front lines, that should keep the positioning correct.

Unit 1

..\.......................
Unit 2.

Reiteration, Unit 2 is in front of Unit 1. Can Unit 2 shoot into the
shieldless flank of unit 1, even though Unit 2 never crosses the front line of
unit
1, but projects into the flank of unit 1.
