Changing thread slightly -

Assuming your mentor (who is bringing you into the game, you *do* have
one, right?) has at least two armies, the rules and the terrain but you
want to have two different armies (also assume foot heavy but with about
15% cavalry figures for estimation purposes) and your own set of the
rules -

What does it cost you to start up in Warrior???

You need a 'playing surface (I use a clearance rug colored green and cost
$16.95 at Lowes.)
You Need two armies (25 mm, 15 mm, 10 mm or my preferred 6 mm) How much
is a moderate sized set of two armies going to cost this new player?
Approximate of course.
You need the rules, whose price slips my mind and I don't have the
printout of the web page with me, costs?
Army List cost?

And the total comes to what? Again approximate...

OK, I'll be the first to jump in on this. Here is a matched set of 25mm
armies:
Fast Warrior Mauryan Indian army, played with this Tuesday:
2 x 6 MI Longbow = 48 Infantry. Mine are RAFM, at 6 for $7.00 = $56.00
2 x 6 MC Crap cavalry = 12 cav figures. RAFM also at 4 for $7.00 = $28.00
2 elephants. Mine are varied, but let's assume a bag of Old Glory: $30.00
2 Heavy chariots. Same as above. $30.00
Total cost for the army = $144.00.
I went with RAFM, because they are still available online, in packs of 6.
You can get Hinchlife in single figures for the same approximate prices.
The chariots and elephants may be even cheaper.
I played against a FW Seleucid army, with 96 infantry and 12 cavalry. The
infantry units do not work out into even multiples of 6, but still figure
less than $150.
Buying Ral Partha at conventions, you can pay $.50 for an infantry figure.
I calculated a FW Aztec army for less than $50.
Buy Zvezda or Italerei plastic 20mm figures, and you will spend more on a
table than on your figures.

Startup costs for even a 25mm set of matched armies are comparable with, or
even less than that for other serious hobbies. If Silver Eagle would come
out with FW Irregular armies, I am sure they would have a much larger
variety, for the approximate same price. Even now, they have 1000 pt armies
which are pretty darn cheap.
