To bring this discussion from the esoteric to something Jon can chew on.

I as I recall there are four historical matchups in question:

1) Hoplites should slowly lose or tie pike;

2) Hoplites should slowly lose or tie HTW-HI Romans;

3) Hoplites should beat in period barbarians (not clear to me if this does/does
not include HTW-armed irregular foot);

4) Hoplites should beat Persians on a fairly regular basis;

Proposal:

Hoplites always fight two full ranks;

Units containing hoplites can declare impetuous charges. For determining
whether they can be impetuous their irregular morale class for these purposes is
the same as their regular morale class (reg C's are Irreg C's; Reg B's are Ireg
B's; Reg A's are Ireg A's --hence never uneasy) for purposes of determining
whether a body can be impetuous.

Units containing hoplites will have the option of impetuously countercharging
opponents who otherwise do not cancel its charge (flank charge provision);

Pike charging impetuous Hoplites do not receive the -2 for facing impetuous LTS.
Pike charges are not cancelled if charged by a unit(s) entirely composed of
impetuous hoplites

Spartan hoplites facing other hoplites receive a +1 modifier to their die roll
after all other modifications are made:

The math based on one element wide, up to 4 element deep combats

Case One: Pike

Pike charges:
Pike 12#4=36
Hoplite 8#5=32

Hoplites charge; pike at halt:
Pike: 8#3=20
Hoplites:8#3 ((+1 (charge) +1 impetous -2 (impetuous foot facing Pike))=20

Case Two: Romans
Either side charges; Roman rules allow countercharge in any event
Romans: 6#6=30
Hoplites: 8#2 (in period Romans are HI) +1 Charge, +1 impetous yields 8#4=24

Case Three: LMI Barbarian Foot--loose order (Note: Using 2 element wide units)

Hoplites: 16#5 yields 64

Thracians (2HCW +JLS/JLS backrank): 6#9 plus 3#7 yields 75
Celtiberians (HTW+JLS): 9#9 yields 86
JLS armed foot: 9#7 yields 54

Case Three B: Barbarian foot close order:

JLS: 12#6 yields 60
HTW: 12# yields 73

Regular foot: (Again two element wide)

HI w JLS: 12#4 yields 36
Hoplites: 16#4 yields 48

Ah yes, well, there you have me, old boy, since the nearest opponent is
150 miles away!, but I will do what I can :-)

Bummer. You can always give us the math, though! ;)
