Always glad to find a philhellene! Allow me a few friendly
comments/suggestions.

First, I'll resist the temptation to ask about "spocksleftball"! :)

Second, philomou, heresy of heresies, Rex is a Latin word, not a
Greek one. The Greek word for king is Basileus.

Third, at least at the beginning of the Iliad (i. 5, Achilles
addresses Agamemnon much more familiarly as Atreide (son of Atreus),
and soon thereafter as euchetai einai pollon aristos Achaion-- he
who boasts of being the most excellent of the Achaeans (i. 90).

Fourth, it is Homer, not Achilles, who first calls Agamemnon (h)anax
andron as a description (i. 171). The (h) is an interpolated
transliteration of a diacritical mark, as in (h)ema=blood or
(h)agios=holy, or (h)oplitos=hoplite. I am unfamiliar with it being
translated as a w, but I could be wrong, since I know Modern Greek
where we don't use such things much better than Ancient Greek.
Nonetheless, you might want to check that out as it might confuse
the only people who will get the reference, Greeks like me.

As to Reg D or Irr C hoplites, I can see the game utility, but I
couldn't bear the shame of it! No self respecting Greek hoplite
would allow himself to be rated anything less than Reg C, and
preferably Reg A or B.

Hoplite army list from Spearpoint (I posted it in the files section
about a month ago), and giving us your comments as an experienced
hoplite player.

Fun stuff, but...

It is most asuredly Latin derivitave, as I think Tacitus describes
the relationship amongst German politics similarly, it is he who
acribes the titles to warleader and political leader. I had a friend
in college who spoke ancient greek, latin (and for all I know korean)
explain to me the heladic tounge and it's relationship to the Iliad
verse. Apparently it is the evolution of Greek within the verses
that initially led to the conclusion that it was written over a span
of hundreds of years as oral poetic history rather than "written".

Anyway, the "w" as latin translation could be pronounced as W or V,
for as any deep latin scholar will tell you we just don't know how
the Romans spoke. We know their language only through the medaevil
filter of church and scholars, so inflection and pronunciation did
not survive unchanged. Simple proof of this is seen in documents
such as the Pipe Rolls of the Plantagenant kings of England where
latin is the only written language and mispelled repeadedly. One can
on occasion in that document see the same word misspelled 3 or 4
times 3 or 4 ways in the course of 3 or 4 pages.
