We had a tourney here in DFW on August 16.

We played a 1 list 1600 point 15mm 3 3.5 round tourney using all and only
official FHE rules, lists, and supersessions. We used standard 14.5 scoring.
We had 2 first time players, and 3 with limited experience. We power matched
rounds 2 and 3 (winners vs winners) and the third round pitted the only 2
players with 10 points. The event was held at Lone Star Comics in Arlington
Texas (who carries FHE product and lead BTW). The store owner, Mike, is gearing
up to play soon as well.

The results were as follows:

Donald Coon - Ghaznavid
Kelly Wilkinson - Arab Empire
David Dietrich - Sungas Indian
Jack Young - Byzantine (sorry I do not know which one)
John Lloyd - Medieval French
Mike Russell - Palmyran
Hanz Dietrich - Later Hoplite
Phillip Lindman - Macedonian
Patrick Byrnes - Later Crusader
Chris Bump - Patrician Roman
George Chrestensen - he was an observer, that was convinced to sit down and push
some lead. He is polishing up a later Teutonic army and wants to jump into
Warrior.

As a side note there were several forfeits due to circumstances beyond player
control. Patrick's Dog dies at 8:05AM causing him to forfeit his round 1 game.
Chris Bump had to miss the last round due to family obligations (frazzled wife
home with twins). Due to each of these things, Patrick and Chris spent most of
their time actually siding with a newer player giving them game coaching, and
rule aids. It worked out really well in the end.

6 NASAMW members were present.

The new guys really took to the game. Although I feel this game does require a
mentor to learn properly, it is a testament to the tightness of the rules how
quickly they picked it up. As head judge, I had to make around 5 rulings all
day, and only 2 were sticky. One required a reading and rereading of a sentence
(about 2HCW shieldlessness), and the rule was clear, we (except Kelly) were just
reading it wrong. The other sticky was a weird situation with a forced charge
due to prep shooting and an enemy partially to its flank that it wanted (and
could legally) charge. There was mutual wheeling during the charge move and
this sometimes causes disagreement between the parties.

Prized were:

Best painted unit: Dave Dietrich $10 FHE gift certificate (beautiful hoplites)
Most waver tests caused in one bound: Dave Dietrich $5 FHE gift certificate
Most casualties inflicted on a single body in one bound: Donald Coon $10 cash
(it was 192)
First place: Donald Coon $15 FHE gift certificate (not accepted, it will be
rolled to FWW).
There were TONS of door prizes donated by Kelly Wilkinson. They ranged from
computer games, to lead, to old slingshot mags. Quite an eclectic mix. Thanks
Kelly.

We felt the turn out was very good considering FWW is only 1 month away. I
would like to thank those that traveled to come from KC, and Bossier City. The
effort is much appreciated.

Don

It sounds like you had a great time and I am pleased you made good
use of the room.

Congrats to the winner!

The wheel to charge thing does come up here now and again. I don't
recall seing it last weekend, but do remember games where it happens.

The biggest thing I noticed in our last weekend get together, was the
lining up of stands, when it is not clearly obvious how it should be
done, and advantages to be gained by lining up, or more to the point,
making your enemy line up. The rules are clear enough, but far too
many situations arise where one side gaines a somewhat large
advantage in bound three by some sort of lining up issue that happens
in bound two (for example). This may be in part because we tend to
favor many small units here, and may also be something that would
clear itself up quite easily with some Scott Holder type help on the
table.

Greg

P.S. Condolences to Patrick on the loss of his pet. It is not an easy
thing to be sure.

Don,

I know that David, Hans, Jack, Kelly, and Pat are NASAMWs members in good
standing, did you get some new people to join or did I missed someone?

Yes it does come up now and again.

If it is foot vs foot, or mounted vs mounted it usually resolves as a
frontal charge due the the charge target simply countercharging (and
wheeling too). But when mounted charge foot, or impetuous foot charge foot,
then that unsupported flank will often times feel the pain of not having a
buddy nearby!
