Warrior Ancient and Medieval Rules

MWAN 120 just had an editorial addressing some of these same issues.

I, too, find the idea of real war repugnant -- even wars I believe were
either unavoidable or justified. My son was asking me whether they would
bring back the draft if we went to war with Iraq. This kind of question helps
you clarify your view on how you feel about a possible war, by the way.

But, I have no qualms in general about playing war games. Indeed, I think it
is great fun both away from the board and in the actual playing.

I must admit I have seen a few players over the years who seem to enjoy
making just barely acceptable jokes while playing the SS or similar units.
That bugs me. But I would never argue with someone who wanted to play the SS
because they were a good fighting unit. Of course, I also wouldn't argue with
someone who wants to play an Italian infantry division because they aren't a
great fighting unit.

The point, it seems to me, is that for some people the only question is how
good were these warriors? (Or how good are they in this particular set of
rules?) For others, there are all kinds of other issues -- from history, to
morality, to the color of the uniforms -- that play an integral part of why a
particular army "suits" a player.

Now, if I could just find a great Walloon army -- from any historical period
-- I'd be set.

What about the Walloon regiments in the Austrian service? They had a noble
history.
