Warrior Press Release 8/04
We’ve had more new members join in the last month than at any time since we
released the game. Welcome to all!!
Since many folks are new here, I thought I’d give you an update on all of
our projects and goings-on.
The two big projects at the moment are Oriental Warrior and the second
printing of the rulebook.
Oriental Warrior is turning out to be quite the product. First, it has 44
lists vice the normal 36 or so. In addition, Scott’s research has led him
into an alliance with the two top Chinese-speaking authorities on the period in
North America. This, combined with the usual thoroughness of the research
and the quality of the help we get means that we feel justified in saying you
won’t find a better product of its type anywhere else. As for when –
well the website says fall right now, and that may be true. But I can tell you
this for sure. Classical Warrior *will* get done for the spring and OW will
be done before Classical Warrior. As soon as we have a better timeline, we
will post it. We are editing the first 33 lists right now while Scott prepares
the last 11. The last 11 include the Mongols who are set to have some very
interesting list rules......
The new rulebook is my big project at the moment. It will contain the
following:
-a new professional layout with perfect bound cover and high quality paper
-integration of all the clarifications, fast warrior errata and list rules
-four pages of color
-more examples
-revisions in wording to clear up the intent of rules
-an expanded, consolidated terrain section
-more/expanded play aids
As for clearing up bad old language, we are still soliciting issues from the
players, so if there is a section of Warrior that simply drives you nuts,
NOW is the time to pass it along to us.
As just one example, I was working today on the wording of the target
priority rule that says an element must shoot at an enemy element that is
directly
in front of it and capable of shooting. For whatever reason, that section
often gives players trouble. So, it will get new language and its own
separate
example. As another example, the tactical factors in hand to hand and
shooting don’t all come with their own separate explanatory text for each one
–
they will now. In neither case is any rule changing to something other than
what it was – although the text may be quite different.
We have also contracted an assistant writer to help me get these rules
products done, and I am very excited about how much that will speed things up
for
us.
Other projects are taking a back seat to the new rule book. Here’s a
summary of where each one sits:
Warrior Battles is our introductory/basic/simpler version of Warrior. It
was interrupted in order to complete the new rulebook, mostly because sales of
the original rulebook far exceeded our projected rate – which certainly is
good news. Also, WB is still based on Warrior and I want to take advantage of
better wording from the new book as a baseline for writing WB. WB will
come with two complete cardboard armies, so a player can begin learning and
playing just from buying the rules book. WB will become project #1 the moment I
hand the new rule book to the printer.
SwordClash is our skirmish rules set. Figures are based individually and
represent a single warrior. 100 points of troops is about 4-9 figures,
depending on quality and the number of mounted figures. The rules are basically
complete and working and my playtest group is on this project starting next
week.
The big issue with SwordClash will be the number of lists possible – 276
historical, 60 fantasy and some odd ones like Pirates and Warrior Princesses.
We obviously cannot put them all in the rule book, so that will probably come
with the 30 historical lists found in Warrior Battles and 30 or so fantasy
lists. The rest will be in a combination of supplements and free online.
Fantasy Warrior/Fantasy Warrior Battles. Fantasy Warrior is available as a
playtest draft in the files section. It has been heavily play-tested, but
still needs 40 or so lists, the magic items rule and the dreaded flyer rule.
We
have made the draft available because we can’t work on it at the moment and
we don’t want players to have to wait (and because it is such a fun game!
lol). Also, it might be that when WB is done, we decide to publish a fantasy
version of that and keep the full Warrior fantasy game as online only. Our ‘
marketing dept.’ will make that decision when the time comes and you’ll be
asked your opinion here. We do feel that it is likely that we will publish
Fantasy WB for sure as fantasy gamers tend to prefer more simple mechanics than
the general Warrior-playing audience.
Campaign Warrior. This product allows for ‘strategic’ Warrior-based
campaign games where the battles are played out using the Warrior rules.
Play-testing is essentially done. When we return to this, all that really
needs
doing is to add three example campaigns.
Master Army List Book. After all the list books have been published for
some time and Scott has had a long break, we will make a product that contains
all the Warrior army lists in one 8.5x11 format with all errata incorporated.
Fleet Warrior. This product will both be a stand-alone ancient naval
miniatures game AND a link game to permit ships in Warrior and Campaign Warrior
games.
Siege Warrior. This product will both be a stand-alone ancient siege
warfare miniatures game AND a link game to permit sieges and permanent
fortifications and in Warrior and Campaign Warrior games.
Warrior Card Game. This product, if we ever do it, will be a collectible
card game where the basic card is a Warrior troop unit and the players command
card ‘armies’ in something akin to the old eagles card game.
Renaissance Warrior. This will be a renaissance miniatures game, using as
many (or as few) of the Warrior mechanics that apply.
How long before all this gets done? Who knows…. At this point, FHE is no
one’s day job, and until it is, nothing gets done as fast as it would if we
were a full-time game company. We are developing a business plan in case we
ever have the money to do this full time or we find that angel investor who
both
has money and would like to see FHE become a full-time operation. So, if
any of you know a rich gamer, pass this along!!
New folks have a lot of resources available to them for free. The files
section of the yahoo group contains many items like the Sample Battle, new play
aids, the ‘in terrain’ rule, rules clarifications, experimental rules,
Fantasy Warrior, scenario design format, New World Warrior etc. Our website,
_www.fourhorsemenenterprises.com_ (http://www.fourhorsemenenterprises.com/) has
all of the list errata, the Fast Warrior list errata, the master list of
lists, the rules clarifications and online ordering.
Note that FHE has a program to reward those who run Warrior events – The
Fifth Horseman program – see it in the files section.

Yo Jon.
Matt and I would be interested in playtesting the Siege Warrior rules when you
get to it.We did some siege gaming when we played Battlesystem(now dead sigh).
Anyway, keep us in mind and we will see if we can help any.
