I am looking to build a morphable army (possibly a pipe dream) that
involves the later welsh and either Later Crusader or 100yrs war
english. When I listed the armies I was interested in a while back
the two that came up as decent choices (besides seculcids, but I am
building a 28mm greek army and am sick of painting classical at the
moment) were welsh and later crusader.

I was either going to build a later crusader army, that uses late
12th century/early 13th century secular knights and men at arms that
could be used as a welsh army from that period seperatley. The
knightly orders and turcopoles would be seperate.

Or

I would build a 100 yrs war english army using a large number of
welsh troops so that it could be made into a smaller all later welsh
army.

Does anyone know any major campaigns, rebellions or battles
(preferably with the welsh giving a fair amount of fight) involving
either of the above time periods? Any books or sources I could follow
up on?

This will be my first Warrior army. I've already got a fair number of
later crusaders waiting to be painted, I was just looking at options.

Thanks for any help,

Brinton

Hi Brinton,

I can say unequivocally that the best work by far covering the Hundred
Years War is Jonathan Sumption's monumental opus magnus "The Hundred
Years War I: Trial By Battle" and "The Hundred Years War II: Trial By
Fire" with more to come. Not only is it incredibly detailed with a
good focus on actual military events but he is very readable author
who can make a work that monumental still be very readable. And both
books are currently in-print in affordable paperback. If you are
interested in the actions of those wonderful Free Company free-booters
associated with this period I could also recommend the recently-
published "Medieval Mercenaries" by Fowler, though this is a pretty
good read it is not quite on the same level as Sumption's work but
still I found it pretty informative and capturing. And, of course,
there is the fictional series of "Grail Quest" books by Bernard
Cromwell ("The Archer's Tale", "Vagabond", "Heretic") if you are into
that sort of thing.

Given your interest you should also take a look at John Morris' "Welsh
Wars of Edward I" which is a classic though a bit dryer than the
others I mentioned and also obviously in an earlier timeframe.

There should be a whole ton of books now about the Third Crusade wince
they made a movie about it. But you might go back to the classic
Steven Runciman's trilogy on the crusades which I found to be pretty
good. R.C. Smail's "Crusading Warfare", also a classic, kind of dances
around the subject and provides a lot of information but is less of a
narrative history than Runciman. If you were interested in the First
Crusade there are some very, very good books - "Victory in the East"
by John France being in my opinion the best hands-down on the
(Frankish) crusading period but only about the First Crusade. Even
Smail is really more geared for the era leading up to the Third
Crusade. Then there is the whole matter of Byzantine history of the
same period which is kind of wrapped up in the subject but that is for
another day and there are some really, realy sharp Byzantine
historians of note on this list who could recommend stuff as well as I
could.

I hope this is of some help and I wish you good luck with your reading
and research. For me that has always been the most fun part of
starting a new army.
