Like a lot of people do at some point, I would like to play the army
of my roots - which is some conglomeration of Norse Irish, Boran or
otherwise, with a bunch of Vikings, or Vikings with a bunch of
Irish, or alternatively Medieval Irish with a bunch of Ostmen, or
(because it might be more palatable having lots of Norman cav and
Welsh missile troops) early Anglo-Irish Normans with a ton of
Ostmen. Might prefer not to do the latter though as it kind of
evades the whole point, I have not fully considered it yet.

Any advice on what to look for in building a list like this, beyond
a good drubbing (which would not exactly be a new experience for
me)? The only comment I have heard here is that the locals do not
run a lot of elephant armies which is what these excel against so it
could be difficult going.

I'd like some pointers on which of the lists to run, what troop
types to be sure to include and how to build up the essential troops
of the army selected. Like most folks, the actual pointing out and
list construction I however like to make my own idea from the
guideline provided by that starting point.

John,

I don't have my lists in front of me at the moment, but I can offer a few short
comments; more later.

If you do the math on various matchups (facing pike, facing Romans, facing
elephants, facing HI/LHI w/2HCT) you'll find that the various Norse/Irish/Scots
shock infantry troop types all too often seem to come up a bit short: they can
get both 2HCW+JLS, but can't be LHI, or they can be LHI but can't be Irr A.

After a bit of this analysis, one can get quite frustrated. I find myself always
coming back to the question "Why not just play Nikophoran Byzantines?" where you
can get Irr B LHI 2HCW,JLS,Sh and kick-ass cavalry and skirmishers too. Sure,
the reason to shy away from this approach is that you want an army that you
have actual historical interest in, but it really sucks to feel like you're
playing a second rate army just for that.

There is one exception. Far and away the best of these Norse/Irish/Scots armies
is Boran Norse Irish. Here you can actually get a core of LHI guys, they can be
armed the way you want, and some can be Irr A. The supporting cast is as good or
better than any of the other lists of this kind.

I've yet to see anyway play Boran Norse Irish in a tournament. I suspect it
would be quite deadly, with the high morale and sheer quantity of guys making
it dangerous even against a cavalry army, at least in 25mm. So I'd give it a
serious look.
