Jon,

Thanks for your prompt and very clear answer to my question. I have a follow-up
question. For this question you can refer to the following illustration:
http://digitalpilgrim.com/img/march2.jpg

This illustration should be interpreted as follows:
(1) The large black rectangle is the Black army, deployed in Black's rear zone.
For purposes of this example it is unimportant how this breaks down in terms of
commands and units.
(2) The large red rectangle on the right is all of the Red army except one
command, deployed in Red's rear zone. For purposes of this example it is
unimportant how this part of Red's army breaks down in terms of commands and
units.
(3) The green area marked D is a forest in Black's rear zone.
(4) The three red units marked A, B, and C are a subgeneral's command in A's
army, with A and B being light infantry units, and C being a heavy cavalry unit
with the general.
(5) Assume the scale is 25mm, though it shouldn't matter; the example will work
essentially the same in 15mm.

Here's the situation:
I'm playing Red, and after deployment it occurs to me that either Black has left
a flank hanging, or Black has an ambush waiting in the woods. My concern is the
ambush; I'd like C's command to find it and expose it if it exists.

And so here's the question:
What orders should I give C to enable his command to march towards the woods and
look for an ambush?

Mark, this isn't a rules question, this is a tactics/opinion question. My
opinion is I would definitely use Probe orders. Two of command C's guys would
head for the enemy body on the left end of black (as I look at him) and one for
where I wanted to 'spring' any ambush. If black stays put, fine, his right is
pinned back. If he moves out, he screens his own ambush (if any) and makes it
easier on me as he obliques out to the left.
