Note the list rule line:
"Such troops who are willing or eager do not have their charge cancelled..."

So, you can use elephants or chariots to easily make hoplites or pike uneasy, and thus unable to use their list rule to charge your impetuous foot...of course, watch out for Alexander or Hannibal's special rules. Alexander near a pike block will make it at least eternally willing.

Ahhh yes, I see it now. Makes perfect sense. Thanks Mark (and the rest of you) for your explanation. Yet another subtlety learned. At least I learned it the easy way rather than the hard way! Damn, I need to play this game more often...
