I think this may be the first success for the new Mongol list, and quite a departure from their performance in the NICT; congrats, Scott.

I don't believe I know Paul - welcome! - but clearly the Swiss success was not an army-dependent one. Paul, care to share how you ran the Swiss and what worked well?

It's not first success for Mongols. I can't remember if it was at Cold Wars this year or Hcon last year but Mike Kelly won with them in 15mm in the Open or Mini, I think the Mini. The only elephants Scott ran into were with Ed Bernhard's Timurids and Scott simply dismounted his Mongol cav and shot the piss out of the elephants.

I find it very interesting that Italian Condotta was the winner in two of the events. Of course, "Italian Condotta" doesn't narrow down what the army looks like by very much....

Personally, I'll be tinkering with Italian Condotta further. It is quite a complicated list, both to design and to play. And I don't see myself reprising 10 Independent States next year. All those testudo-forming Romans would not be too healthy for it.

Shouldn't Mike Lewis be in the 7th place rather than that of eighth in the Mini?

Hi Ewan

In the mini I ran a Swiss CINC w/ a Lorrainer ally. It consisted of CinC 43 LHI/LMI P/2HCT, 8e LHI/LMI p/2HCT, 10e LHI/LMI P/2HCT, 2 2e SHK/HC L, sh, 2 2e LI HG, 2 2e LI CB, Lor AG 2e SHK L, sh, 2e Lor SHK, L,Sh. Was tinkering w/ this list till the start of the mini, and am changing a few things like not taking the 10e Block and only 8e blocks. Better flexibility. Was glad though not to see an elephant in the mini.

I usually took a water feature to hold down a flank and then a wood or three to try place another difficult terrain feature on my other flank about 3-4 feet from the water edge. MY setup as you can imagine was pretty small.

I usually placed an LI inthe woods to slow down the flank w/ a Reg SHK near by to slow down anyone gettign through. my formation usually went Woods,LI, SHK, Pike block, LI screener in front of these, Pike block, SHK, LI screener, CINC block, SHK, SHK, LI screener, water feature. W/ only 6 scouting points this gave me flexibility to manuever for matchups, especially if I forced marched some of the LI.

The Itallian Condotta was similar. Neop CINC w/ Swiss Ally. 3 Reg SHK blocks, 3 Irr SHK blocks, 2 8e Pike/2HCT blocks, 1 4e LI HG (swiss), 2 4e Moog units (HTW,JLS), 1 4e LI CB

Similar setup w/ the Moogs mixed in. Swiss was forced marched out to 12" to allow Neop setup behind. The fatigue was never really a factor. Terrain chose was similar. I just had to align myself to the better matchups.

Overall there were 2 rules changes that really help the Swiss and how I used them. 1. Not taking a waiver from a mounted charge in the flank. Twice LC JLS units hit a pike unit in the flank and failed to do a CPF (I was four wide for 32 man count). The next turn saw a SHK hit this LC, causing waivers from the break, and several waivers all around. 2. The ability to bring up the 2HCT elements from the back and them count as 'steady' when the rest of the unit is disordered. An enemy Pike or LTS unit does not like to see this on the second bound. Wore down Hypaspists and Phlangists this way.

I will say that i did get lucky as many of us do. One opponent charge a pike block w/ 2 SHC units just to see the an SG die from a catastrophe and the whole side of the battlefield taking multiple waivers. Unfortunetly for the opponent, his CINC was the other SHC unit and got hit by the 2HCT the next turn. In another game, I caught 2 LC units w/ SHK units.

This was my 1st Historicon and 1 st tourney outside of KC (yes I have to put up w/ Jon Cleaves!). Loves it. Now I just have to paint a 25mm for the NICT next year.

For the Italian Condotta, can a Neopolitan Cinc take a Swiss ally? I thought that was only allowed with a Venice in Italy force?

It was explained to me by Scott Holder for an earlier tourney that the Swiss can be taken, but as per the new erratta, they can take nothing but themselves, ie no other.
