Quick Question:

A Marian Roman HI unit is in HTH in Rough terrain. Rough terrain disorders close foot for a -2 HTH modifier in the first round. Now when the second rank interpenetrates and fights in the next turn, does that second rank also receive the -2 HTH modifier?

Normally the second rank does not receive the -2 in HTH under the Roman rules. However, I would think that since the disorder is not combat caused, the interpenetrated new front rank should also fight disordered.

You are correct. In this circumstance, the new first rank fights disordered.

I need to look at this and see if we need to erratasize the Roman rules to cover it.

In the meantime, this answer will suffice.

I believe that you or Jon had previously stated that even if a Roman unit was disordered prior to entering hand-to-hand, the rank circulating forward in the second bound of hand-to-hand counted steady.

Are you now saying that it depends on why the Roman unit was previously disordered, and that terrain as a cause of disorder is different from other causes?

From the Imperial Warrior Errata:

"Page 3, Roman Infantry Rules, Circulating Combatants, Delete the entire "Circulating Combatants" section and replace with: CIRCULATING COMBATANTS: Advanced military techniques developed in Rome included the regular practice of circulating ranks and units to the front in hand-to-hand combat. To reflect these practices, as an exception to WARRIOR rules sections indicated below, Marian, EIR, Severan MIR legionaries and those troops named "Roman Legionaries" in lists 2, 3, 8, 14 and are NOT shaken, broken, broken-through, disembarking, in difficult terrain or in "fulcum" may:, etc, etc..." ( Exchange ranks )

Thus, if the unit is in this state it's not even an allowable move. Jon? Scott?

That's correct, Tim. That is why Scott answered the way he did. he should not have said "new" first rank because there cannot be one in this instance - essentially its just disordered period and can't make use of the rule in the first place.

My correction stands corrected. This comes from trying to put the finishing touches on the barbarian rules. Yeah, that's it.

Yes, you must understand that we are keeping Scott chained to a set of barbarian test list rules for HCon this year and Bill and I have been torturing him with tweaks.
