Mark and Frank,
Thank you for the discussion on LCh. My two dowzen + Hebrew Chariots are not exactly optimal, but the discussion of ways to support them sounded pretty good. Still more climbing on the two-wheelin' learning curve.
I so often misuse the combined arms part of my army down at the tactical level. I have the pieces there, but don't apply them together optimally ;-(

So how effective are heavy chariots with chariot runners as a 2nd rank?
You would want them to be Irr B with JLS.
Have people used these effectively?

There's really only one list where you can get the necessary chariots that 'beat' enough things...Zhou...the Chinese list after Shang that can get detachments of Irr LMI JLS.
Those chariots 'can' beat lancers, but must get to 120p in order to charge impetuously. They start out losing to enemy impetuous EHC, though (but winning aginst other lancers including knights.) God help you if you can't get the impetuous charge off (lancers are at 160p.) Still, if the die rolls favor the lancers you're in extremely bad trouble.
They do pretty well against a lot of infantry.
Their bane is elephants, from which they must stay far away.
They also don't maneuver particularly well, so screening off enemy elephants and getting the chariots to the right place if really hard.

I have used shang quite a bit. I use the chariots (without detatcments) in 3 element units. I find against anything on a horse with a lance you are pretty much indestructable as long as the cav are in the standard 2 el unit. The cav finds it almost impossible to do a cpf in the second round when following up the chariots, who then break through.
