Am I wrong in my recollection of the rules?

Chris

I believe you are wrong in your recollection of the rules. I believe it is "mounted with impetuous foot" not "impetuous mounted with impetuous foot". My rules are sitting on my desk at work, however; I'll check when I get in.

I think you'll also find that support shooting is irrelevant to determining the ratio of casualties.

And note that you really don't want the SHC to be impetuous to get the effects I describe above; you're trying to minimize the chance the SHC get disordered, not maximize the casualties the SHC inflict.

I stand by my recommendation: take the one unit of SHC; you still have enough EHC to enjoy the advantages of EHC that Chris describes.

I'm sure Mark Stone will have more substantive comments...but...

Keep the morale on your EHC to at least B so they can counter readily. Reg C is pretty bad for 'shock' troops.

Try to use one less unit of EHC and one more of knights?

Drop the Kontaratoi entirely...for these lists and how you want to organize and fight with them...they're worse than useless.

The Varangians should be 2HCW,JLS,Sh/JLS,Sh...no axes for the back rank.

What Frank said... additionally:
* Peltastoi should be in 6 stand units, not a 12 stand unit;
* Peltastoi need 1 stand to be C class, but others could potentially be D class to save points (Ds shoot just as well as Cs, they just don't waver or counter as well)
* Don't buy shields for the LC unless you are also going to buy JLS for them; build them cheap for shooting or strong for fighting, but not halfway between;
* Split the Vardariots into 2 2-stand units and upgrade them to Reg B; these guys make excellent force marchers and harrassers, since they are fast, compact, and make counters/wavers extremely well;
* C class light cav probalby wants to be in a 6-stand unit, though this is less critical.

I would assume the 1E of C class in a D class unit is to avoid waver checks when prompted to charge.

Ahhh...forgot..Komnenan does require 4 elements of Kontaratoi...sadly...

Other Byzantine lists typically don't (so perhaps this one should not either).

Agree on the small units of skirmishers to ensure they can skirmish.

I used to run spearmen in 4 Element units - seemed like a good idea at the time.
