I am fascinated by the frankish armies with irregular HTW troops. I initially looked at the merovingians but the lack of troop variety and HC, jls list minimums made me think they would not play well. I do not play tournaments and we generally play until victory is obvious. I looked at the early Frankish armies in the imperial warrior book and felt that they offered more options. This is the list I came up with. Please comment.

command one

CINC HC, JLS,SH + 2 irrB HC,JLS, SH

5 X 6E Foot warrior 1/2 Irr B, 1/2 Irr C, MI, HTW, SH

2 X 6E Roman Auxilia Bowmen Reg C LMI, B, SH

2 X 7E Irr C LI, JLS, SH

command two

Ostrogothic ally General HC, L, SH + 2 Irr B, HC, L, SH
Ostrogothic Noble Cav 1E Irr B, HC, L, SH

4 X 2E (1E ost noble cav Irr B, HC, L, Sh + 1E ost fol cav Irr B, MC, L, SH)

2 X 6E ostrogothic Bowmen Irr C, LMI, B

1 X 8E Irr C, LI, B

total 1601 points in 2 commands.

my thoughts: making cinc body 2 elements gives little benefit and i used the points to help pay for LI for that command

irr c htw with Irr b in front ranks hits hardas does 5 bodies of lanced cav

knights might be a problem but they can be worn out with the HC, L even if not beaten and the blocks of HTW inf can handle almost anyone

as this is not a tournament game the MI will get into the fight

please comment

thanks

As you note, knights would be a problem...specifically SHK can ride down anything in your army and destroy it...causing routs and wavers.

The typical skilled knight opponent will try to screen your infantry off and ignore it, while killing all your HC. Your infantry can't catch the skirmishers that opponent will use to do so.

So...try not to fight too many good, well-played, knight armies!

Instead, protect the flanks of your infantry line and get the HTW guys into the enemy...then follow up with lancers on open elements or opposing flanks.

I do think that is superior...and useful for you to playtest with, and tweak given what you learn.
