Hi Scott,

Thanks for the new lists. I just have a couple of questions on the new Russ and Varangian list (#30).

1. In previous dark ages list, Varangian Warriors not armed with JLS could fight 1.5 ranks when charging, countercharging, or pursuing. Was this an oversight, because in new Viking rules 'warriors' can no longer do this?

2. If you choose a Varangian CinC, all minimums/maximums for Varangians are doubled. This means a miniumum of 55 elements of irregular foot not counting generals. If you include one general and miniumum command for largest possible units, you are at over 850 points. Were Russ minimums supposed to be reduced?

First, Bill found a costing error for the CinC upgrade for the Varangian ally-general. It's costed as if he were a sub, thus, the upgrade should only be 35 pts.

As for the other points raised, we're thinking about halving the Russ min/max and eliminate the Druzhina minimums *if* the CinC is Varangian.

Try concocting a list with that in mind and let us know.

Thanks, those changes to Russ seem to make sense to me. I am not sure the number of Berserkir should be doubled since that makes them same as a straight up Viking list. Should the Varangian 'Warriors' be retitled to Hirdsmen so they can also fight 1.5 ranks with 2HCW?

Also, Dmitri is looking at Normans and I believe the Breton LC on page 82 should be 14 points.

Thanks, John, for the comments. Two good catches.

Varangians are Swedish Vikings who turned East toward Russia, at about the same time as Norse and Danish Vikings, whose activities were more fully recorded in European chronicles, went West and South to England, Ireland and France. In Warrior, they are treated essentially the same as Vikings. The Viking Infantry Rules apply to Varangians, which means that the Varangian Warriors should get the same 1.5 rank benefit as do Viking Hirdsmen. (Note that while other Viking Infantry Rules apply to any Vikings or Varangians, neither Viking Warrior Spearmen nor Varangian Spearmen get the 1.5 rank benefit.) At the Dark Age Theme event, that is the way it will be played.

Glad to hear that Dmitri is interested in Normans; they should be very tough in period, esp. with the special rules.

We took a look at the Breton LC in the Norman sublist to DAW #29. They seem to be correctly costed at 12 pts. Please let us know if we are missing something.

However, it turns out that the Gascon LC in the main list are not; they start out the same as the Bretons, and should be costed at the same 12 pts. There is an upgrade to Irr B for Gascons, which would bring the LC up to the 14 pts at which they are listed. This is a mistake; if Dmitri wants to include them in his list, he should start them out at the correct 12 pts cost.
