Good Afternoon
I was looking at some lists and wondered wjat units a general on an elephant could join, and what would fight.
So for example if a Sassanid general on an elephant ( single stand) joins a unit of cataphracts - he gets placed in front of the unit, does he then count as a catphract or as an elephant?
I am sure it is in the rules, but an not sure where.
All the best
Robert

This is actually all covered in the rules under the staff elements of generals joining various types of units.

In your specific case, an elephant staff element joining a mounted body, like any other mounted staff element, would be placed in the front rank.

That staff element fights exactly as any other element of its type (an elephant with whatever crew it has in your case).
