FYI: Massive Holy Warrior errata is now posted at the FHE home page and as an attachment to a post over in the Army list section.

You'll need this for Hcon 2011 if you plan on running any armies from this book.

There's a Feudal Warrior update in the works to discuss issues like Shieldwall (not for very many guys or many lists, but some), Norman-ness (some HC will get it as appropriate), and Barbarian-ness.

Brief partial answers for you Dennis:
1) List 8 Norman Milites - probably the HC will get Norman Cav rules, but not HK, etc.

2) List 8 shieldwall - probably not

3) List 8 - Barbarian foot rules, not sure yet

PostPosted: Mon Apr 25, 2011 5:31 pm    Post subject: Irr vs Reg in ShieldWall

Frank hi,

At present the ShieldWall rule refers to close/loose order troops. It
does not distinguish between Irr and Reg troops. I would argue that
if Irr troops can stand in a 'disciplined line' that Reg troops that meet
all the other criteria should also be able.

regards, Dennis

More of an issue, Dennis, is who exactly are the guys who would be using Shieldwall?

Where did they come from?

Were they guys (or directly related to such) who did have documented use of shieldwall? (generally western and northern European troops within a certain time frame)

I can't speak to matters of history, much. That's in the hands of Scott Holder and Bill Low.

Dennis:

I'm not getting what you're getting at with that list of troops.

I can say that it's unlikely that the Italian Communal troops will "get" shieldwall. There's simply no evidence that the formation was used in that area during that time. Moreover, while there will be some bleedover from DAW in terms of special rules, keep in mind that Shieldwall was predominately a formation with documentation for the armies covered by that book, not much outside of that book.

Scott hi,

the list was a response to Frank.

My original question was about the fact that
the Shieldwall rule just says Close/Loose order troops.

So can the Regular Troops in the DarkAge book use
Shieldwall if they meet all the other criteria
ie. specific lists, weapons etc

Since we made no mention, deliberately, of Reg or Irr, take it literally.

Which means yeah, unless specified in the list itself as not being able to form it, Regs in the lists enumerated for DAW if they meet all the other criteria can form Shieldwall.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure Bill will be telling me shortly. Smile

Another update made to the Theme armies lists, namely more troops types and nationalities excluded.

DAW Shield Wall
List 6 - Comiatatus and Civic Militia may NOT form shieldwall
List 18 - Lombard spearmen with JLS certainly can form shieldwall
List 20 - Berber/Andalusian/Negro Spearmen may NOT form Shieldwall
(Andalusians seem to have to have LTS anyway)
List 21 - Axemen & Spearmen can use shieldwall whether upgraded or not
List 23 - Militia spearmen with JLS can use Shieldwall

Feudal Warrior Shield Wall
List 8 - don't believe there are plans to permit the Italian communals Shieldwall

In general, as emphasis shifted much more to mounted knights in western Europe, and many infantry become feudal serfs or the like, Shieldwall falls out of use.
