AS I read the rules - one may choose to run an irregular Hoplite list - but all figures must be IRR or none
That is unless you are running Spartans - in which case it does not apply. What about Healots/slaves?
Just playing with list ideas
Thoughts?

I don't have the list in front of me but what does it mean that it does not apply to Spartans? Do you mean that all spartans are Reg?

The early list says that Hoplites can be Irr - but all or none with teh exception of Biotion and Spartiates and Laekodeamons .
The thought is to use irregular and irregular hoplites - it is expensive, however but the combat vs the super deep taxix:
16 @4 = 48
vs
24@3 =60 (for this the super deep have to be 6 ranks deep so a 48 man unit vs a 16 man unit and a swing of 1 on the dice means the 16 beats the 48 man. My guess is that peoiple will erun 24 man units in conga lines:
8@4 = 24
12 @3 30
second turn 12@3
vs 12 at 2
so the huge block keeps winning but with any dice roll changing that. Not sure it is worth it, but it could be worth a shot - because you cannot afford too many big taxis.

I see what you mean and it has me thinking. I probably won't use the Early list since I really like the Later list, but your point is well taken.
My problem, which you pointed out, is that they are expensive and I know I am always trying to cover my flanks. I try to use terrain to help.

I am planning on using the early list. My list so far is as follows:
CinC and Spartiates/Laekodeamons
4 more mixed units
2 units of Li, jls, sh
2 units of peltasts
1 unit of Reg D Hoplites
Ally + Irr HI, LTS, Jls, Sh - six elements
3X 2 elemant HC L
1X 12 elemwnts LC B
6 elements li B
8 elements LI, jls, sh
Not a great army but very playable, and able to fight just about anything. Vs the big taxis to be better they would need 48 man units, and even if they did:
24@3 (reg C) vs 20 @3 (reg A and B) - I win or draw 41.75% of the time if my math is correct, and if I win second round is better etc , if we draw I win 57% of the time - so not bad - and points wise my unit is 140 points - his is 218 - so I will have higher numbers - more troops - so a decent list. I struggles against lots of really good light cavalry - (Thessalians or Scythians) but do pretty well otherwise.
Thoughts

I will have to look at this army.
HC with L Shocked
It seems you have quite a bite of LC B.
Who is the Ally Gen. ?
I have to get the book from Matt and look at it.
Seems very interesting.
ED the Maybe Early Spartan.

Lakedaimonian/Spartiate and Theban-led Boiotian Hoplites are always Reg.

If one runs any Irr Hoplites, then all non-Lakedaimonian/Spartiate/Boiotian Hoplites must be Irr. The exception to the “all/none” applies only to these particular named varieties, and other Hoplites in a Spartan- or Theban-led army can be Irr.

Helots are not Hoplites; the Irr Hoplite rule does not apply to them. We may consider whether upgraded Neodamodeis should get the Hoplite rules.

BTW, there should not be a lot of Scythians in the Theme. We hope to be posting participating lists and list modifications shortly.

Bill the way I read this was that the Spartan and laekodeamons were regular the allies irregular - fits my story for my army, but may not be historically correct.
The figs you see painted are amazons which I got in a trade - so was planning to run them and maybe one other unit as IRR - very expensive, but in an all comers list has some advantages against elephants etc.
