The light javelinmen on the Spartan left opened the battle with exchanges with the Carthaginian light cavalry: they stood and took the cavalry charge, pushed back but holding.

Mattilcar watched cautiously as the lines moved ever closer. His gaze probed each approaching unit for an opportunity to force an opening for his cavalry. Yes, push the Gallic warband ever closer to the brush. Keep the peltasts close, to exploit any gaps. Suddenly, his aide broke his concentration.

“Sir, that cloud of dust on the flank. Light Cav!” the aide shouted. “ Spanish Light cav!”

Mattilcar turned to the right. “Damn that Marcellus,” he whispered. Wheeling his horse, he gestured to his Noble Cav to meet the threat.

“What of the Spartans to our front?” asked the aide anxiously.

“Keep the line moving, press with Agapelogus’s veteran hoplites into the Spartans. I will return.” Quickly Mattilcar rode off to meet the threat to his flank.

Marcellus’ Gallic Cav on his right charged in against some Carthaginian light slingers, who quickly routed.

Marcellus sat up on his mount to view the coming clash. He turned to eye his trumpeter. “Stay close, Gaius. The time is coming.” He nudged his horse forward as his retinue followed, anticipating his legions as they moved as one. Suddenly, the air was shattered by the booming trumpet of the charging pachyderms accompanied by the piercing war cries of the Spanish. Marcellus watched as the clash occurred. The Roman line reeled, disordered under the weight of the charge. “Now, Gaius, now!” Marcellus shouted, raising his hand. Instantaneously, the trumpet blared. Marcellus watched with eager expectation as the disordered maniples exchanged ranks with fresh rear maniples. Soon, the surprised Carthaginians were facing a new wall of Roman legionaries. Marcellus smiled, ever so composed. “Now we have them” he murmured. Now we move forward. “

The elephants became disoriented and recoiled from the legions. The Spanish recoiled as well, some shaken and some disordered.

Moving his view down the line as the legionnaires moved forward, Marcellus’ expression changed as he noticed something wrong. “Where is the Gallic Cav?” asked Marcellus, turning to his staff. “They should be on our right.”

“They pursued the routing slingers up to the marsh,” Vinicius replied.

“What!” Marcellus exclaimed.

Bomilcar watched with glee as the pursuing Roman Gallic Cav fell into the trap. “Agapelogus was right!” he exclaimed. He waved his sword and immediately the Roman-led Gallic Cav were surrounded by charging Carthaginian, Gallic and Greek mercenary cavalry. He urged his horse forward as his unit whirled by the flank of the Roman-led Gauls and into them. The Gauls had no chance. Victory turned to bitter defeat in a moment.
