The Epic continues:

The Training Field:

Xenophon looked across the field watching the troops practice and exercise. The day was hot and he knew that it was a hard day to train and drill. Suddenly, his attention was diverted as a horse rode up and Memnon dismounted.
“How is he doing?” Memnon quired.

“It is amazing how well he is doing. I thought he would need more time but each day he gets stronger. Especially, with today so hot.”

“I think it was the physicians that Marcellus and Agapelogus sent, really helped” added Memnon

“ Yes, they did do wonders. He will be ready for the campaign to Portlandia. He really is anticipating it and it keeps his spirits up. It is true that he is willing himself well.”

“Good, without him we will never make the campaign.”

Across the field to their left, a figure is seen jogging toward them.
Memnon turns his gaze.

“Why is Philon in such a hurry?”

Xenophon also now notices it. “Not sure, but we will soon know.” He mused.

“Why the hurry in this heat, Philon?”

The young man reached them panting and sweating. “News for ……..Leonidas.” he burst out.”

“He is finishing the drills. Why what is so important?”

“Word from the council.” He continued breathlessly.

“What do they want, we are on time and we will be ready for the Portlandia campaign.” Memnon retorted.

“We have new troubles. The council has accepted a new plea. The Phocaean city of Marseille is pleading for help against the Gauls.”

“What!!! Marseille is not our problem.” Memnon demanded.

“Isn’t Marseille in the Roman sphere of influence?” replied Xenophon more calmly, looking at Memnon angerly.

“It is, but it seems that Marcellus and the romans are busy in Sicily and holding the Carthaginians.”

“What about Agapelogus(Bill L)?” Xenophon added.

“He is still reorganizing and marshaling his forces after the campaign at Western Point.”

“OK, where is Smog (Matt K)? The council feels that we are the only ones ready to go. Besides I think that the council wants to get our influence there and not Athens.”

“ So when do we start?”

“This better not interfere with the Portlandia campaign!” interjected Memnon.

“Don’t worry, we need the practice.” Xenophon said

“Now.” Philon stated. “But who will tell Leonidas?” he continued.

The three turned their heads toward the Training Field.
