THESSALY PART 1

Thessaly:

Xenophon fully armored stood surrounded by his companions of the 10000. He looked up at the mid morning sun as it glided motionless across the clear sky. The breeze felt refreshing and brought his mind back to Portlandia, so far from the plains of Thessaly where the gods had spirited him. It was if he could feel that day so clear in his emotions and see familiar faces of his friends. It was a strange quirk of fate that brought him to this day, so far from his closest friends: Leonidas and Memnon. However, not so unwanted.
It started with a message from his family in Athens. It arrived quite unexpected but serendipitous. They were requesting that he return to Athens and take command of an Athenian force being assembled to march into Thessaly. It seemed that the Athenian council could not agree on anyone because of all the political bickering. His family submitted his name. He was far enough away from the politics of Athens and his exploits in Asia made him an ACCEPTABLE candidate.
He complied for many reasons foremost of which was to give his family more prestige in Athens.
When he arrived in Athens, the picture became clearer. Thessaly appealed for help. They were being threatened from Illyria; and with their main force away with Lilrobles(Robert Turnbull), who was last reported to be in Ewanconia, of which they had no reports; they called on Athens for help. Athens wanting to extend their influence agreed.
Soon he was marching north with a partial force. He had four units of Athenian Hoplites with assorted Peltasts and Javelinmen. He also had Damaphades and his Allied Hoplites.
Damaphades had volunteered to come with him on his new venture. He was always a good friend and this was better than the training fields of Sparta. He also could only get his personal companions of the 10000 to accompany him. The rest did not vote to assist Athens. The council informed him that a unit of Phliasian Hoplites would meet them on the way and in Thessaly a unit of Thracians along with a contingent of Thessalian Cavalry.
Still his greatest surprise was yet to come. When he finally arrived and inspected the most recent reports, he could barely believe them. The Illyrian threat was not Illyrian but Gallic. A large Gallic force had lain waste a path down the coast, led by a fierce woman warrior wheedling a white spear, MAEVE! How could that be! The surprises continued. A warchief Mattwebsterix was her ally. Maeve(MattKollmer) must be gathering the Celtic tribes. There was even some very vague rumors that she was wooing the subservient tribes of Scotus Holderix. She must have crossed through Italy, reports also mentioned Roman prisoner in their camp.
