This thread is really interesting for me.
I Play EIR(Danubian list- Aurelian [late period].
Couple of comments:
1) Bolt shooters are a problem- I have ranged from :Well, if I gotta get them lets get a lot of them. Result Nuke missiles but small army. I lose. I think Robert(one of my list gurus) is right get carts. Shoot 360 and OK you can't shoot over everything but at least you can shoot over somethings.
2) Barbarians in 12El units. We(MattK, MattW, me) had big debate over 12El v 9El. MattK(use 9El) point is use the extra saved points to get more units. Same as Todd and Mark and Robert are saying. MattW(use 12El) point is that they can take more punishment. As Todd says, player preference.
3)I have resisted for YEARS getting Sarmatians. As a Danubian player, they are my only ally. The Toddmeister (my personal list guru) endorses them. He now has me thinking maybe I should get them.
4) The reason your friend lost was because his Sacred Standard was not the WHITE SPEAR OF MAEVE.

Hello Ed, the insightful, if somewhat indecisive
That mirrors my experience of artillery almost exactly.
Current thinking is to take the minimum and upgrade if possible, because if I take more my entire deployment and game plan tends to focus on the artillery which then assumes an importance I don't think it should have.
Regarding Warbands, I have only faced them, not run them yet, but I would go for the 12 element option, based purely on a 'stick around long enough and you might get lucky with the dice' sort of plan.
Regards,
Raphael

Sorry, Ed, forgot to ask,
What is the White Spear of Maeve?

For the romans - 1 or two units of auxilia and maybe in 8's as they are not great and more legions - may also cut the 4 elements of rga cab b/1/2 shiled and use 2 units of jls reg B - but others may differ

Hello Robert,
I was tempted to increase the size of the auxilia, to at least 6 elements to start with anyway, and perhaps give them a 3 element detachment of cavalry. This was hopefully to pre-empt the enemy charge and shield them against chariots. Some like slings, I like auxilia, next game I'm going to have both If only I could mount a 3 talent stone thrower on a cart!

I did see the possibility of the Numeri as Regular - go with that! a 4E unit is 42 points. I also like 2E units as well.

Thanks Todd,
I will probably do that. I might also try and regrade the Legions back up to B by dropping a Spanish LI unit, as the thought of all those 'never uneasy' warbands is already making me nervous. As we will be using the Xrule that all B class are eager, along with the Barbarian and Roman List Rules, I will hopefully get to counter charge to tip the odds back slightly in my favour.

Hello Todd,
Just to check, can these units legitimately place all the sling in the front rank and so fire as eight figures. I don't see anything against it, but just thought that I would ask.

So I made the assumption here that the Romans would have to be a Western army in order to operate historically in the British Isles. Western armies can get some HC lancers (and should) but no EHC.
If, on the other hand, you're going to put together an Eastern Roman army,, then by all means buy the Armenian ally. You get some SHC/EHC units that are very solid shock troops agianst anything other than SHK, and you get the cheap but useful Armenian LC (Irr D LC B, a bargain at 3 points a figure). |

This thread has me really enthralled!
Surprised about the HC jls. Always got the L.
However, Robert has a point about keeping them for
flanks. My problem: I never seem to get them there.
Sarmatians: I have found them at Foundry and RAFM.
The Rafm figs are not as nice but adequate .
Foundry look nicer. I am pretty sure there is another
maker. I want to say Crusader Miniatures. I will keep
looking.
Like the title and TRUE;
Ed the Indecisive.
PS Oh..!!! The White Spear of Maeve. Son, MattK, likes to
play Bill L 's Gauls. He painted up the Boudicca fig with a white
Spear in her hand. Also, I always liked the Mythical figure of Maeve
in Irish mythology. I have christened the white spear of Maeve.
From my calculations, he hasn't lost a game yet with the WHITE SPEAR
OF MAEVE. |

Mark,
Thanks for that reminder. I didn't realise at first that the Sarmartians were Danube specific. I will probably go with the Western HC L option to start with then.

Ed,
Thanks for clearing up the White Spear question. I did look the lady in question up, but didn't find any mention of armament. My current, soon to be retired Sacred Standard is Touchwood , the somewhat trampled Toad. Lifelong companion of Catweasel.
As to Sarmartians, I think A&A miniatures do a range, as do Warlord Games.

Yes - they can all fire and the entire unit can also skirmish I believe as well - making them better in open terrain.

Hello All,
Well, finally all the new recruits are painted and based, so a rematch sometime over the Christmas period will hopefully be reported on in the not too distant future!
Thanks again for all the helpful advice. My next army will be Elamite with all those 3 bow armed chariots.
Best Regards,
Raphael |
