Interesting piece:

http://www.nature.com/news/collapse-of-aztec-society-linked-to-catastrophic-salmonella-outbreak-1.21485

I didn't realize that other, European diseases like measles and small pox had been ruled out.

The scope of death wrought by the Spanish is still under reported.

96% mortality over a short period - I cannot begin to imagine the dislocation and collapse that goes with such a change

Thanks for the article Scott. I posted it to my AP Euro students as we study the fall of the Aztecs in class. 100 years and a reduction of 95% is staggering to say the least.

We also take a look at de las Casas insights into the mistreatment of the native population http://origins.osu.edu/milestones/july-2015-bartolom-de-las-casas-and-500-years-racial-injustice.

It is of my belief and one of the reasons I play Aztec/Tepanec is to revenge the disease and conquest Very Happy - Assuming they could have survived the diseases maybe they could have held off the Spanish.

Go Tepanecs!

Todd

that is interesting.....multiple epidemics hitting a population in succession. crazy to think about that.
I guess a historical lesson to keep society clean
