As Michael walked around the camp, inspecting certain constructions that were ongoing. He looked to the hills and river, and he hoped that Edwardus would be back before the Bulgarians mounted an attack. His fortifications were good but not enough. His orders were to watch the border. He has and fortunately he has not seen any massing of Bulgarians. As he turned to walk back to his tent to study the scouting reports, he noticed some movement from the south. Soon he saw a messenger approaching.
“Reports from Edwardus!” The messenger said.
Michael’s eyes widened.
“God be praised!” He breathed.
He jogged to the gate; followed by the messenger. As he slowed, the first troops started to enter the camp. They walked not marched into the camp slowly and with an air of exhaustion. He walked up to one lancer and grabbing the saddle harness, walked along and questioned him.
“Where is Edwardus and Demitri?”
“They follow toward the end of the column.”
“Did you win?”
“No”
He released the harness and continued to watch as the column walked by.
Minutes seemed like hours as he strained to see the end. Soon he observed the sloping red banner of Demitri. Painstakingly he waited until he saw Demitir. When Demitri saw him, he trotted up and slide from the horse. He embraced Michael.
“How did the campaign go?”
Demitri sighted and lowered his eyes.
“Did you lose men…….Was it a hard fight…….”
“No ,and Yes and No. We were not RASH.”
“Where is Edwardus?”
“He is coming.”
They turned and presently Edwardus dismounted and placed his hand over Michael’s.
“Did not go well”
Edwardus nodded and the three walked slowly back to the command tent. Theo pulled back the flap and soon servants handed the three bowls of water to wash hands and faces, refreshing them.
“Demitri says, you were not rash”. Interjected Michael.
Edwardus nodded again.
“No sooner had we left port, a messenger skiff from the emperor intercepted us and ordered us to sail to the Abydos. A Maurikian Byzantine army was approaching. We landed and soon we faced the army. However, it soon became apparent that we did not want to attack each other. Many of our troops saw members of their family in the opposing ranks. We rained arrows on them and they responded, little was accomplished.
Suddenly, their general (Chris Schultis) at the last moment forced some units to attack. A few of our units shook. It ended in a 0-1 for Chris.
Soon after embarking, the messenger skiff appeared again. Another army of Burgundians was entering byzantine territory. We approached the enemy and noticed that the army had deployed on their right flank leaving their left wide open. We advanced and had a firefight with the enemy. The slingers and bowmen kept up a constant discharge of weapons. The crucial moment came as Demitri with his command circled around and prepared to attack their left flank. They responded by running out a LI unit and started to turn their Sub to meet the threat. Unfortunately, Demitri charged with his command impetuously into the LI and routed them but being impetuous they followed the LI when they hoped to charge into the Sub. In following the LI, Demitri exposed his flank to the Sub’s charge. Demitri fought hard and did not route but recoiled. Immediately, the Burgundians charged their knights and managed to shake some of our units.
We lost 1-2 (Terry Dix won)
Again we marched back to the ships, but a new fleet came into view. We marched to their landing area. They were Sea Peoples.
They set uo with three blocks of Sea People troops with fighting transports on each flank.
We matched their blocks with Othgar’s Varangians with LMI Jls,sh troops on the flanks. I sent Demitri’s command on a flank march.
The fighting was fierce in the center and Demitri always punctual arrived on bound 3 and charged into the transports and stuck. The Sea Peoples Gen charged the LC Pechenegs and got the worst of it.
We lost a great tough battle 5-1 (BillL won).
