On the Maritza Plain.
The byzantine army slowly wound down the mountains onto the plain. The Bulgarian Khan feasted at the camp of the local chieftain of Kollmerica. Now was the time of decision. As Edwardus came to the head of the column, he could see the Bulgarians deploying. One command covered half the field. The other command was forming up on the other wing.
Edwardus motioned to Michael.
“Michael, your command is the largest with the infantry you mustered from the border forts. You cover the center. “
“Edwardus, It will be done but let me take my cavalry and cover the far right wing. Those LC could turn our flank. Remember! This Khan is revered by his troops. We don’t want to be overconfident.”
Edwardus nodded. “Have faith Michael.”
“I will cover the left flank. Hopefully, I can hold.”
At this point, Demitri rode up.
“Where do you want me, Edwardus?”
Edwardus looked along the line. He noticed a gap between two terrain pieces on the right flank. It seemed to be covered by a LI unit. He could not see much beyond it.
“There! Demitri see if you can punch through. Michael will cover your right flank and hopefully, the center will hold.”
They all nodded and rode off along the line to their places.
As Edwardus rode to the left, he observed that a rough area was in the middle of the right flank, then a gap with the next rough area in the center, but whose shoulder was on the right flank, then a open center with a hill in the left flank, but hard on the center line.
The byzantine LI was forming up in the middle rough area with the HC lancers on their right flank. The garrison Skuts in the center next to the LI. One unit of LMI Psiloi next to the Skuts and then another LMI on the hill.
He could see that two blocks of Slav infantry for the Bulgarians covered the center right. The Bulgarian flanks seem to be covered by LI, LC and cavalry.
Suddenly, he rounded the hill and saw HC and LC facing him.
Soon all byzantine cavalry on both flanks skirmished with the Bulgarians. The Byzantine archers were shooting well. Soon LC on both sides charged each other with many recalls on both sides. Suddenly, the one block of Slav infantry charged the Skuts. The ferocity of the charge routed the Skuts despite the flight of D and Arrows. The LMI on their left shook.
Demitri watched as the Skuts routed and shook is head, “Garrison troops” he murmured.
Then turning his attention to the gap. He raised his standard and his command trotted ahead into the gap. Soon he noticed two HC units just beyond the LI. He pushed forward and motioned to his LC to charge the LI. The rest of his command skirmished and fired. The LI fled but got stuck in the HC.
Michael from his position on the far right noticed the advance.
“Demitri is advancing to attack, we must cover his flank and give him time to strike the blow.” He yelled to these troops.
Simultaneously, on the left flank, Edwardus continued to skirmish and charge the LC, and hopefully to set up a charge against a HC.
In its turn, he realized that the LMI on the hill was set on its weapons. Should he command them to move? No, why put them into a trap.
Unexpectedly, he heard someone on his left say, “Advance them my Lord. Advance them down the hill and angle them to fire on the advancing HC.”
He turned and there, hard by his side rode a soldier. He was a youth, but he spoke with much authority and pointed to the LMI. How did he know what I was thinking, where did he come from. He had never saw his like before, He knew the men of his command. But he turned to look at the LMI, when he turned back to ask the youth. He was gone. Confused but now suddenly determined, he sent the order to the LMI. Soon any indecision left him and he pressed forward.
In the interim Demitri saw his chance. With the Bulgarian LI mixed with its HC, now was the time to charge the LI and convert charge into the HC. Demitri raised his standard.
“Now is the time, charge home and victory.” He yelled. They drove through the LI and into the HC and routed them.
Michael soon noticed Demitri’s impetuous charge and quickly realized that the time was now. It was all or nothing. He raised his standard and harassed the LC and HC before him.
Soon the Bulgarian command on the byzantine right started to retired.
Edwardus knew something had happened when the Bulgarian units before him started to move away.
He raised his hands above his head and gave thanks.
