Had a strange one come up today. Unit hit in the flank with no other enemy within 240. If it turns to face, it will go into column due to its current formations. By going into column, it will now have enemy within 240. Does this prevent the unit from turning to face?

6.14 Counters
"Countering bodies may not end closer to any known enemy that is within 240p. No part of the non-maneuver portion of a counter move may get closer to an enemy body within 240p."

I'm assuming the new enemy, that would be within 240 at the end of the counter, are known to the unit countering.

Note exactly how these lines read. You can't end closer or have non-maneuver get closer to enemy already within 240p.

The new enemy are not already within 240p.

Therefore you can end up at or closer than 240p at the end of the counter, particularly as it is a maneuver, not a non-maneuver.

Now...I fully expect everyone to throw up all kinds of cases such as shooters outside 240p countering to move to 240p and shoot...and perhaps a foot unit countering up to/inside 240p and then expanding twice and charging...etc. etc....go ahead, let's debate.

That's how we ended up playing it (thanks to a quick ruling from Todd!).

Thank you, sir!

The first part of the question is the usual, a unit hit in the flank rolls the counter, tries to turn, but is stopped by an enemy unit on the other side due to getting closer during the formation change. I don't care either way about the issue, I just want to play consistently.

The added issue of if the enemy unit is more than 240 away at the start of the counter not counting for determining where a counter could end would be an endless hassle and subject to horrible or glorious abuse, especially by regular 6 or 12 element units. Varnagians charging something that was about 270 paces away at the theoretical start of counters.

How about a more simple pair of rules, no getting closer to known enemy units and getting closer to enemy units due to formation changes when hit in the flank don't count.

You can currently play consistently...what perhaps some/many of us thought the way things were and that we played, has been incorrect.

You would only be unable to make that counter with the unit if it would not fit into the space it needed to.

Now, the relatively 'unclear' portion of the governing counter rules COULD be read such that you can non-maneuver up to 240p, but then only maneuver closer.

Still...which is it? What? This particular rules issue is under discussion at this time.
