Can Vikings mix Warriors & Warrior Bowmen in same unit?
Cheers, sleepysloo. |

Since it's not specified in the 'Restrictions' section as being allowed to mix, the answer is no. Pretty clear cut. _________________ These Rules Suck, Let's Paint! |

Many thanks for your rapid response!
In the Viking Infantry Rules at the start of the latest DA Army List PDF page 5, it states:
Hirdsmen/Warriors/Berserkir may fight in mixed units of the same order. This does not apply to Warrior Bowmen.
Clearly, therefore, Hirsmen Bowmen CAN fight in such mixed units, and here it would appear that the term 'Hirdsmen' is being used to mean 'Hirdsmen and/or Hirdsmen Bowmen'. I wondered, therefore if the term 'Warriors' was being used in a similar fashion to mean 'Warriors and/or Warrior Bowmen'. In which case units with Warriors could include Warrior Bowmen (but NOT if Hirdmen/Bersirkirs were also in the unit).
Can you put me right here?
Thanks for your generous time on this!

Hey Bill,
viking has become a very interesting list since the new rendition of Dark Age Warrior and the ShieldWall rules.
You can run lots of close foot that has 2HCW in front (can also be HI) and has a second rank of Jls as well. In ShieldWall they don't count shieldless and are very, very tough.
Of course people have developed ways to break through this challenge but not all lists have the same nutcrackers to do so.
Hope you are surviving the current situation wherever you are.

Thanks Todd.
Yes were in lockdown in England. Hope youre OK.
So am I right in saying that:
1. Hirdsman Bowmen CAN be in mixed units
2. Warrior Bowman cannot be in mixed units (even with Warrior Spearmen).

You are correct. The Viking Infantry Rules specify Hirdsmen simply by that term, and not by full terms such as "Viking Hirdsmen" or "Viking Hirdsmen Bowmen".
Thus, given that rules section states that Hirdsmen can mix (along with Warriors or Berserkir, but NOT with Warrior Bowmen), Hirdsmen Bowmen can be mixed thusly.
Warrior Bowmen cannot be in any mixed units...but, are very powerful on their own...you can still fire bows when in Shieldwall.

Thanks everyone! Now I've just got to work out how to give my early Saxons a fighting chance against them Vikings! Maybe max out the peasantry with HTW (though that doesn't 'feel' very Alfred the Great to me).
Cheers,
